I recently bought a Philips SIC4750/27 webcam, and I just got a black screen when I tested it in Skype. It works it other apps, like Cheese. I am aware of the fact that this is a common problem, I just wanted to add the model to the list of ones this happens to, so it can be fixed.

Try with a contact if he/she can see you. Some users don't see the cam when they test, but in the otherside when they is calling, the contact can see them.

I can't figure out how to start video when I am in a call. The person I called kept saying "click the button at the bottom of the call box" and could not understand that I do not have the Windows version of program. I really want to get this working, and I'm probably missing something. Could someone explain this to me?

If you are video capable when you are in a call, then you should indeed have a video button at the bottom of the call window. Next to the dialpad button.

I do, and I click start video stream, but I don't see any video of myself or the person I'm contacting (also video-capable, but on Windows.) The other person doesn't see any video of me either, but says that they can see video of their self. Audio works fine.

We've just released a beta update (2.0.0.43). If you start this version from the console and do the same again, can you let me know what it says on the console? It may say there was some sort of capturing error.

Well, with this new beta the video works in the test box. It doesn't give me any error messages, it just works. Thanks a lot for that, but I can't tell you of any message it would give me if it didn't.
