Skype for Linux developments continues of course.

Skype for Linux developments continues of course.

Excuse me?

The Linux version is 2.0.0.68, while the Windows version is already 3.8.0.115.
This difference is not acceptable. Not only the minor releases are late, but the major release is severely late.
Being a proprietary software, the company is the sole entity responsible for this abusive delay.

If it's in the company's rights to make the decision that Linux users deserve this treatment, remember that it is in my rights and that of every user to stop using Skype.

The Linux version doesn't even have support for groups! How ridiculous...
For now I have 16 contacts, so I can afford to wait for the versions to catch up a bit.
But soon I'll STOP using skype. And I will have to find an alternative, which means I will not return.
I will not wait for the time when I have 100, 200 contacts to stop using Skype. (For relevance of argument, let me say that I have 400 contacts on MSN.)

So here's a warning for the Skype company: assume your responsibilities and step up on the Linux development, or loose users to your direct competitors.

Treat us better, or we'll go - and each user lost is a user that will have reasons and arguments to drag other Skype users.
We are not weightless.

I, for the other side, find skype linux better than windows one.

Fro the release version, man, what does made you think that windows and linux versioning number have something to do with each other?

Well, the version numbers are supposed to mean change.
While the third level (_._.x) changes can simply mean security fixes that aren't necessarily present on different platform versions (or other similarly non-spread items), a major release (x.0, as in 3.0) is supposed to mean a fundamental change.
You can try to hold that one platform having version number 3.x and another 3.y doesn't mean they're not up to date or at the same level of development, and that would be something to discuss.

But if one version is 2.x and another 3.y... well, a major release is supposed to mean a "fundamental change", which if done on the Linux version would move the major version number as well.

That's what makes me think that version numbers have, at the very least on the first digit, to do with each-other. smile.png

I went back to linux for good one year ago. Since then I basically stopped loading money into skype account and started financing voip alternatives instead. I love skype and still use it but I am not willing to pay full price for a limited service.
Skype 2.x for windows came out in 2006 if I remember correctly and two full years of delay is not just work in progress: it is a clear sign of company policy.
Andypoo
Hi, version numbers are not in sync between versions of Skype on different platforms.

So the difference between 3.x and 3.y is no different than 2.x and 3.x. There's no relation across different platforms, as UI functionality is developed independently. Often in a different order and based on user feedback for each respective platform.

If there are specific features you are waiting on, feel free to poke the threads related to them. Contact Groups and SMS seem to be hot topics at the moment.

Andrew.

Before making statements at least verify that you have exact information.

2.0 gold1 released on 13/3/2008

I was talking about skype 2.0 for windows, of course.
It came out on 05.01.2006 as version 2.0.0.69 (from your release note page).
Given that the linux version is still 2.0 that makes two years delay to me.

Also, if you you guys at skype think that the 2.0 linux version is rather more comparable to a 2.7 windows version I'd suggest to name it accordingly: it is confusing and frustrating for the users otherwise.
StevensOnln1
In what way is it confusing? The developers have already said that the platforms are developed independently, which doesn't make a 2 year delay as the version numbers aren't in sync. The current version of Skype for Mac OS X is 2.7, are you going to complain that that (also a version for the that platform) is also delayed somehow?
