Full Version: CPU maxed out when video is enabled

Hello!

Thank you very much for providing video capabilities in Skype. It works great for me, with excellent sound and image quality and high frame rates. Fantastic!

The one issue I notice, though, is that the CPU is completely maxed out. Fortunately I have a dual-core machine, so one core remains free for other things, but others may not be so lucky. Skype loads up one of the cores completely, but only if video is enabled. To trigger that effect it is sufficient to merely test the video in the options menu, you don't even have to be on a call with anyone. So, it appears as if it is the mere act of rendering the image that causes the problem.

Is this a known issue? Or is this by design, and caused by the codecs that are used? Does anyone else see this problem? Obviously, maxing out the CPU is not such a good thing, especially if you are on a laptop and battery power, or if you have only one core.

I have a Dell Latitude D820, with Logitech QuickCam EC, running Ubuntu 7.04. I honestly have no idea what driver I'm using. Can anyone tell me how to find out?

If you have a v4l(1) camera like gspca, then it's using the readwrite method which is rather CPU intensive at the moment. I'm working on some optimisations at the moment.

Andy.
