Does anyone know if it is possible to automatically merge the old translation so that it doesn't have to be done from scratch all over again?

I could of course spend some time writing a tool for it myself but if QT Linguist can do it out of the box that would be a better idea.

hello... I see that catalan translation is already not supported in skype, monday I'm gonna put into forums the files of translations, I would like that catalan will be installed by default in skype, such happens in other languages...

Wow! Thanks for sharing your translations. Developers have to decide which translations may be bundled with the installer eventually.

How did you update your 1.4 translation source to 2.0, Fenix-TX?

Well, the true is that i used kbabel to translate 2.0 from 1.4, but i have to read and verify that all translations were corrects, so manually in qt linguist tool, i have to use the button next and done, and add or change translations when needed.

I have not completed my 2.0 translation to Swedish yet but I made a small tool in java to migrate previously translated 1.4 translations to 2.0.

Attached is a zip file, the only reason it is a zip file is that the board didn't allow me to upload jar files (which are basically zip files). To use it, follow these instructions (replacing the file names with whatever you have):

host:/tmp> java -jar transmigrate.jar -in skype_sv.ts -in2 /usr/local/skype_static-2.0.0.13/lang/skype_en.ts -out /tmp/skype2/skype_sv.ts

The file specified after "-in" is the 1.4 file, the file specified after "-in2" is the 2.0 source for the translation. The file specified after "-out" is the destination file ("-out file.ts" is optional, if omitted the output will be sent to stdout). If a string from the same context exists in the first file, that translation will be migrated.
Just starting "java -jar transmigrate.jar" will display a short usage string.

After the merge, the output strings will all be marked as unfinished until you to review them in linguist and mark them as "done".

The source is open on demand, send me a PM if you want the source and/or have found a bug.
Java5 or better is required.

It is an error saying that the periodic UIC updated failed...
I am not sure what UIC is in this case but I think it is just a softphone component used inside Skype. Do you have to expand it? Can't you just say that "the periodic UIC update failed" but in Spanish?

"Our Birthday" means "Your own birthday" and is used in events notification system.

Hello all. I tried adding a translation for Serbian (language code: sr, file: skype_sr.qm). However, this translation does not get picked up by Skype and does not appear in the language list.

Contrasting to this, putting a file such as skype_es.qm puts the language name (Espanol) into the list of available languages.

What's the catch?

hello, I have skype 2.0 translated, here I attachs you files from 1.4 and 2.0 versions.

I would like to add a modification to language recognisition of skype, there are standards for the languages, skype could use these standards and show only the languages that lives in translation directory.

No, it isn't, skype only supports some languages, catalan is unsupported and I think that other languages aren't also supported.

In windows version you could load language files, edit them, and also there's a kind of translation program.

True, there are three different Swedish languages and only the main Swedish (SV) is supported but that was not the point you made. You suggested that they should use the standard ISO language codes (which they do for the languages supported) and that only the languages that lives in the translation directory should be shown which is also how it works (at least with my install).

If your point was that more languages should be supported, that is probably the argument you should make.
However, I very much doubt that this is something Skype have restricted, it is probably just a restriction put on them by the Qt library.

Hi -- the UI is currently only looking for languages that Skype officially support on other platforms, not every language.

The reason for this is that we manually add translations for language names into the UI code itself - and then only scan for these languages.

This is why some languages will not appear until we add support for them explicitly to the UI code. And such issues should be filed into the Jira bug tracking system to be changed in a future release.

so that, is it possible to insert this language or languages that users post in forums, or simply if a user add a language file from the web, it could be allowed, nowadays if I want to use skype in catalan I have to rename turkish files to .old and catalan files to turkish name. Skype should detect that user has installed new languages, if skype wants to install it when you install the program is an other thing, but I think a support to an other languages not tested by skype, should also been supported.

It's not about us pre-testing languages, so much as having a preset "list" of supported languages that we have an equal list of language names, and then we use this list to generate the drop-down box in the Options dialog.

But we'll see what we can do in future for further language support.

Hi, I must admit that I didn't understood how the traduction should be done and where to check already done (thus adopted) work.
My remark is about the event-manager using a google-like traduction (2.0.0.27 Beta Linux Ubuntu Feisty):
nameofperson turns 23 became in French: nameofperson tourne 23
That makes no sense.
French: nameofperson va avoir 23 ans
German: nameofperson wird 23

it's a common issue, translators don't know that they have possibility to move the age where they want in the translation, but instead they "literally" translated from english.
Also Italian was like this, but after I pointed to the translator how to do he changed it.

english part is:
<source>%1, %2 turns %3</source>
with for example:
%1 = today
%2 = Marco
%3 = 28

will become "today, Marco turns 28"

in Italian should be a little bit different:

<translation>%1, %2 compie %3 anni</translation>

so as in Italian translation did it also others can do it

To use a translation that is posted here you need to have the Trolltech Qt developer tools installed (It might be that the translator has already compiled the .qm-file for you. If yes, continue at step 2)


Step 1: Open the .TS (translation source) file in Linguist and select "File -> Release"

Step 2: Copy the .qm-file that was created (or that you obtained from the translator) into the directory /usr/share/skype/lang. Afterwards you can select your translation in the Skype options.

80% complete Norwegian (Bokmål) translation. I'll probably finish it within a week.

I recently updated my translation of Skype for Linux into Slovak language for 2.0.0.63. It has been done for few weeks and also working (with a little trick) on 2.0.0.27 beta, but not released on public - until now.

I would like to thank:
- to vlbelicka who allowed me to use his translation for Windows version as foundation for my localization of Linux version. In the end I used only something from 10 to 20 % of his strings, but without his approval I would definitely not even consider to start with it
- and also to my great friend Mr. Richard Zdarsky for his help with merging the strings from vlbelicka's SK .LANG file with EN .TS file, useful comments and testing of the translation in his free time.

Update: 7.4.2008 - source file re-checked and compared with latest 2.0.0.68 release. There were no real changes so the file is fully compliant with latest version. Based on this fact I simply renamed it to avoid any confusion.

Is there any kind of public repository somewhere for these translations (and possibly other community contributions)? It is quickly becoming increasingly difficult to keep track of the files posted.

Me and other Skype staff members are watching these forums and we are trying to include user-contributed translations in popular languages.

I am hoping to get links on www.skype.com, on the skype-for-linux download page, where skype would provide download of the latest user-provided translations. As it is, a new skype-for-linux user does not even get a hint that his or her language might be available as a user-provided translation. You have to be both a skype and linux geek simultaneously in order to first find the forums, then find the translation threads, then find your language... Best would be if all user-provided translations could be collected as a distribution-specific add-on package, i.e. rpm, deb or tar.gz, with the latest and greatest translations in one go. And of course updated whenever a translation is updated.

Judging from the frequency of updates on this forum, the work burden should not be especially great.

Yes.
Download a translated language bundle from this thread (or get one from the lang directory in your skype install path) and copy the .qm file to /usr/share/skype/lang and restart skype.

I don't know if it is a bug or not that it doesn't detect what you have in the lang directory below the skype install directory. I would have preferred having it there as I still run both 1.4 and 2.0 and there is just one /usr/share/skype/lang.

While I am at it... Noticed that the 2.0.0.63 release had a few new and changed strings.

Also it doesn't seem to find the sounds by default, it might be related to this problem.
Fiddling with files in the /usr tree outside of the package system is really not something I like doing, so that is not an option...
