Skype and Apple iPhone...

When will S/W be available?

I purchased an Apple iPhone running OSX today. Seems like a great device - I've used the WiFi feature at several hotspots. Worked flawlessly.

I would hope that Skype is working on a s/w package that would take advantage of the 802.11 and OSX features of the iPhone....would be a 'potent' combination. I understand the issues involved (i.e., AT&T, the authorized wireless distributor of the iPhone in the USA) but hope that these problems can be surmounted.

Any info about a Skype for iPhone app??

Actually, I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss Skype on the iPhone. If a company like Talkety can support VOIP on the iPhone, then surely Skype can too.

Well, Skype could be made for the iPhone. 3rd party applications can be made for the phone using Web 2.0, and it was announced that many 3rd party applications are already in the works. Since the iPhone has been semi-"unlocked" by hackers and made into an iPod with WiFi and Safari capabilities, then basically all you would need is the same app for Max OS X converted into Web 2.0.

It may take some time, but they should be able to do it.

I just found that I can use Skype on my iphone by using an application called soonr (www.soonr.com) that runs on your PC or MAC and is able to forward Skype calls to your cell phone. It works quite well and you can browse all your PC's files as well.

Have you actually tested this or is this hearsay? Please let us know.

well that works but thats not the solution anybody is looking for.

Soonr and Soonr-Skype combo works with any phone w/ wap access. Of course thats a lie because of so many variables but if your phone doesn't do it right then just hit up soonr.com's forums.

Soonr Skype uses SkypeOut credits which defeats the purpose of free VoIP that everyone is trying to get on the iPhone for the ultimate kick in the face to Apple.

Solution denied.

but soonr is my favorite cell phone application btw - i love being able to download any of my MP3s wherever I am and let people here it - or show them a pic i have saved on my comp, but i still voted for google maps thats my other fav mobile app that I rely on far more often.

Talkety works on the iPhone and unless Skype hurries up and comes out with a web 2.0 portal for my Skype account I will be buying Talkety minutes instead of using Skype.

I have found a link to this beta testing of Skype for iPhone.
The vendors also provide the screenshots, probably the release of the software will be in couple days.

OK, so far Talkety and soonr are both pretty much useless. They do allow you to do VOIP but they do it by calling you back, so if you are traveling internationally and have access to wifi, then the call is still costing you $2 or more per minute for the incoming call. I guess they are ok for calling from the US and save you on international dialing.

Someone needs to make a real Skype for the iPhone so you can call directly without the callback thing.

Apple also needs to wake up and open up development on the iPhone... the main reason I switched from Verizon & the Razr was because of how they crippled their cool phones to make more money from the services. It's just greedy. Apple is doing it by not allowing real app development on the iPhone.

my 2c worth...

I think Skype and newly announced iPod touch will let me ditch the traditional cellphone all together. Here is why: http://www.iphonesr.us/?p=40

The Ipod touch does not have a mic built in. Not sure if it has bluetooth either.. maybe that would do it, your still better off with the Iphone. I have an unlocked version and have not updated it. I'm hoping somewhere out there is a judge and a band of lawyers that are techies and working hard to make these phones available to everyone for any services and make apple provide us with an emergency OS disk to format and start from scratch if required. All other PDA's and OS's have these things.. I think Apple should be no different. Greedy buggers.

But still, Skype has to do their magic and create the app for the IPHONe and provide instructions on how to install it on an Iphone.

We all know that Steve (apple) and AT&T aren't going to like that. Hopefully Skype takes advantage of this and gets an app going soon. Then maybe Skype can get some Canadian SKYPE IN numbers. (hint hint, nudge, nudge, wink, wink...)

Somebody already try to make a Skype call with Apple Iphone using:
www.shapeservices.com
www.soonr.com
As I understand you always need to make
1st local mobile call (via skype.png skype) and if you don't call other PC you need to add also cost for regular skype.png skype out call cost.
Is it correct?
Also is it a same why that work this program:

Despite the many contributions here, it does not seem that it is possible to call a Skype account on a computer for free from an iPhone and also be called on the iPhone from a computer endowed with a Skype account, again, for free.
I would like to buy an iPhone instead of 3SkypePhone. The latter offers the above facilities, but iPhone looks nicer.

Yes, I do not live in the United States, I live in Britain, so I am not interested in American-specific solutions.
Can anybody help with a definitive answer applicable also to Britain?
Thank you

we need a native 3rd party app for apple iphone!! I don't think I can wait for another 2 months, and even if I could...there are no guarantees AT&T is going to play nicely with the likes of Skype, in terms of "permitting" apple to let skype develop a certified skype program for the iphone. Lets cross our fingers!

No it runs on a PC but...it does allow you to use Skype calling services remotely from a iPhone.

With MyToGo for Skype ("Which is Free") this is possible, however, MyToGo for Skype runs on Windows, not an Apple. More detail here: http://www.testing.onlytherightanswers.com...icle&sid=58
