I replaced my old XP computer with a new Vista Ultimate one.
I used the Vista function “Transfer Files and Settings” but the Skype files and settings were not transferred. How can I do this manually? Thanks, Anadin |

QUOTE(anadin2 @ Thu Mar 8 2007, 20:48) I replaced my old XP computer with a new Vista Ultimate one. I used the Vista function “Transfer Files and Settings” but the Skype files and settings were not transferred. How can I do this manually? Thanks, Anadin On the old computer: in the bar of Windows Explorer type "%AppData%\Skype\" and the Skype folders and files will be displayed no matter that they are usually hidden. There should be a folder named as your Skype name and outside the folder there should be a "Shared"XML document and on some cases there also could be a "shared" LCK file. Burn these files and the folder that has the same name as your Skype name (if there were other users on that computer using Skype also burn the other folders which names are actually Skype names. Don't forget to burn the files outside the folder/s) to a disc. On the new computer before actually installing Skype "tell" the installer not to run Skype after the installation. Install Skype... . Vista might be different from XP but try to locate and place the files you burned to C:\Documents and Settings\computer user name\Application Data\Skype. If there is a Skype folder it should be empty (if there isn't a Skype Folder create one). Place the files exactly as they were placed on the old PC without touching them("Shared"XML outside of the Skype name folder/s and along with it outside place "shared" LCK if you had such a file in the first place). Launch Skype! Everything has to be OK if Vista is not so different from XP. Try. It might help but if it doesn't then sorry I'm an XP user. Good luck and report back! On both XP and Vista you can get to the correct directory by using the name %AppData%
This avoids the difference in directory structure, and it eliminates the need to play around with hidden file and folder settings. Good luck. |

Thanks! You must transfer the WHOLE Skype folder. How to find, see above. You cannot just transfer the chat files. Your "new" config file, you get with installing Skype, will not be able to find them (In config.xml you will find the pointers to those chat files) It is nearly impossible to edit them correctly. So please move the whole Skype folder Andrew This post has been edited by SpeedyAndrew: Thu Nov 1 2007, 15:53 |

Hi Kalin,
Your post is really helpful, I tried it and it works. But I faced some problem initially as I didn't know the exact location where the 'Skype' folder and it's content should be copied to on my Vista system, but I managed to locate it at below: Computer > C: > Users > xxxxx > AppData > Roaming > Note: xxxxx is your Vista login ID Hope the above helps. Cheers Jeffrey |

It works! As Jeffrey Tang wrote the place where to copy the Skype directory in Vista is Computer > C: > Users > xxxxx > AppData > Roaming > xxxxx is your username As Jamie Watson wrote you can locate the directory by opening Computer and typing %AppData% Thank you Калин |

Hi all,
I've just tried it and it worked for me also. I want to add just one note for those who have Windows Vista configured to a non-english language. The folder "users" is replaced by the translation of that word in the installed language (in my case, "usuários"). The rest is exactly the same as said in the topics above. Another note: I had already used the new installation to chat by Skype and I couldn't merge the old and new yet. I'll try to understand the folder naming logic inside the the "chatsync" directory to figure it out. |
