Come on. We NEED skype on our palms. There are some palms with wi-fi (Tungsten C and some Sony's). I started using skype ONLY because I thought that you were developing a palm os version. If you need someone to beta test a palm os version, just send me a PM. I have a tungsten C and I connect trough an actiontec multimedia home gateway...[/b]

for the record: i would be surprised if the "promise" in the article came from anyone actually associated with skype (and not just some journalist making things up).

But the article on abcnews (the source) states: "Company founder Niklas Zennstrom called from Europe and the audio quality was at least as clear as any landline phone service. A Palm OS version is promised for next month, and the handheld software also supports the paid SkypeOut service (2 cents per minute for U.S. calls) for connecting with traditional phones worldwide.".

Is this just a fake? Niklas Zennstrom never said that?

no, i don't think niklas would say that. also note how the article uses clever wording to make it *look* as if it came from niklas, without actually saying that.

@jaan:

Maybe you can make some statements concerning the PALM OS platform ? There are thousands of PALM OS users outside who really like to use SKYPE on their device.
Will there be a PALM OS applicaton or not ? All this waiting is making me sick!
No official word from the SKYPE side in all this months, which can´t be to difficult to annouce. Either you see the Palm OS platform as potential player in this market or not.

Thanks for your opinion!

But you are absolutely sure? Did niklas say that there's no skype for palm under development?. I assume that your answer is the official skype answer, because you are part of skype's staff (it seems so).

But would a palm have enough horse power for skype ? Even my 850 Mhz laptop runs short (at least with the linux codecs, and that's all I use). But count me in otherwise ;-)

well, i'm not a spokesperson for skype, so my answers are not "official" in that sense of the word. i'm just a developer who happens to know that porting to palm is extremely difficult because the platform is completely different from the platforms skype runs on today. also, as the above poster points out, i've too heard that palm's hardware is rather weak.

i would have ignored this thread, but i just wanted to have a record to point to in october when there will be a flood of "so, where's the promised palm version?" messages. silly journalists..

I don't think that palm hardware is an issue. There's already a Vo-ip solution for palm OS, and actually the tungsten C and the tungsten T3 have at least as much power as any other 400 Mhz pocket pc device. They both run on a faster OS, so I think that skype would even work on slower palms (even on the new 312 Mhz ones).

Considering what Terminus said, then I think that I can now give out the following url, that goes to vli's home page. They have a working solution for palm OS. Skype for palmOS doesn't exist and won't exist, so don't remove this link... They are not your competitors.
www.vliusa.com
By the way... You were asking wy did people stop using skype... No support for palmOS is my answer. For this reason, I'm not recommending skype YET.

Thanks for the clarification. We have created an article from this thread to notify PalmOS users:

Thanks.

PalmSkype has the potential to be a killer app for Skype - there are tons of Palm users and Wifi capable Palms.
VOIP using handhelds will be very popular I predict. Whoever corners the PalmOS market will make a bundle.
You just need to have the right competent PalmOS programmers.

I agree with you PalmDoc.
It is a matter of commercial issue.

If VLI can make such a small app to work
on Palm OS, I doubt the Skype developers
here are incapable to match them in skills.
So, skills should not be an issue.

If there can be a business case for VLI, surely
there can be business case for Skype as well.

Look at it this way, Palm OS is not only manufactured
by PalmOne alone, but Samsung, Acer, Sony...etc.

It is a commercial issue.
If Palm users unite and prepare to spend more $$ on
SkypeOut using Palm, it will be there for us to spend...

Well, one thing for sure, I know I'll be using SkypeOut much more if I had it on my Tungsten T3.
