The Universal Language Real-Time Message Translator was created because of the lack of any real facility to provide on-line language translation in real time.

In today's world with so many people from all over the world communicating there are many who would like to communicate with others in other countries but may not feel they have the language skills to do so.

The ULRTMT version for Skype has been created to help people using Skype not fear communicating with anyone world wide because of the lack of specific language skills for any given language.

This concept is a protected work and is currently in Beta testing. Currently the Skype version supports both Real-Time translation of Chat history, as well as inbound and outbound chat messages.

The ULRTMT can be used for many other things, which include but are not limited to converting chat history to your native language, communicating with others in Real-Time chats while having chat text received and sent translated in Real-time so that people can participate in a chat using their native language and many people using many different languages can be in the same chat, using many different languages, yet all understand each other without the need to know any of the other languages being used in the chat.

The ULRTMT Skype version was designed using the Skype4COM lib interface, we hope this will "Light a Fire" under all the developers to see just how flexible and friendly both the Skype4COM and API interfaces really are.

Your imagination is the only limit on what possible Skype interfaces you could design, we hope this awakens your creativity and helps motivate you to design some cool Skype interfaces.

Go to IE Tools -> Internet Options -> Security

Click on the Trusted Sites Icon, then click on the Sites button, make sure the require server verification box is NOT checked. In the Add this web site to the zone enter:

testing.onlytherightanswers.com

Click the add button, click ok. click ok again.

You are now ready to use the ULRTMT Skype version to instantly translate any of your chat history or translate languages in real-time in active chats. Refresh the ULRTMT Skype version web page or click here to get back to it:

http://virtualphonecalling.com/modules.php...ticle&sid=9

If prompted to install the Skype4COM lib ActiveX, Please choose Install.

Once the page is displayed, click on the Refresh Chat Information button, on the left your entire chat history will be displayed, on the right any open ("Active Chats") you currently are in will be displayed. Simply click on the chat of your choice, and you will see the original chat text displayed in the right window, to translate any chat simply select the translation and re-click the chat you wish to have translated. You will see the messages being translated in real time, and once all chat messages have been translated, you will see the word complete.

Very soon, the ULRTMT for Skype version will also support SMS translation, we hope this shows you just how powerful the Skype developer interfaces are and hopefully you may even begin to learn a new language or two at your own pace of course.

Enjoy, any questions just post them here.

Thanks

ZOverLord

Happy to announce that the The ULRTMT - Skype Version 2.0 Beta "Universal Language Real-Time Message Translator" now supports:

Real Time Chat Translation!

Yes, you can now chat with others in your own native language and have your text translated in "Real-Time". BOTH your send and receive text can be translated and in Real-Time.

Example: Say you wish to type German but have your text go into the Chat as English, simply start a chat using the Skype Client, Invite the people you wish to be in the chat. Then Simply click here ("You can save this link as a favorite if you wish"):

http://virtualphonecalling.com/modules.php...ticle&sid=9

Click the Refresh Chats Button, the Chat you started should be in the Active Chats List, set your translation ("In this example") to "English To German".

Click on the chat you started listed in the Active Chats list.

Now If you enter German in the left send widow, your text will be translated to English, all others in the chat will see English NOT German, even with using the NORMAL Skype Chat window for this chat, if for whatever reason you would like to enter English, you can do so by entering English text in the right send window.

This works for many languages and we will be updating it for even more very soon.

NOTE: If you plan on testing the translation by copying and pasting text, be careful to NOT grab any carriage returns and Line feeds, in other words, for example, if you set your translation to: "English to German", and you type English text in the send box on the right, and then from the left copy text in German and attempt to paste it into the left send box, only grab the exact text, sometimes you can get the hidden carriage returns and line feeds picked up with your cut and past because you cannot see them ("This normally would not be the case for someone typing their language in the left send box") and this will create some funky characters.

Online translation is far from perfect, but it still allows Skype users to communicate with many other people world wide who they might never had been able to have a chat with and that's what counts.

So for example in one chat, there could be people with these translation Settings, typing in their native languages using the left send box ("They could also at any time use the right send box to send English as well, using this example"):

English to German
English to Spanish
English to French
English to Italian
English to Portuguese
English to Arabic BETA
English to Japanese BETA
English to Korean BETA
English to Chinese (Simplified) BETA

These people would by typing in their native language using the left send box, seeing the Skype chat messages received converted both to their native language on the left as well as English on the right ("Using this Example").

Anyone who spoke English ("Using this Example") would be able to be in the chat using the NORMAL Skype Chat window which Skype provides and not need any kind of translation because each user of the ULRTMT version for Skype users above would have already translated their langauge into English prior to it actually being placed into the chat itself, and any messages received by anyone in the chat using the ULRTMT would be converted to their language as well as English ("Using this Example").

This is just one example, the default language for the Skype Chat could be any of the above languages, not Just English.

It might sound very complicated, but try it out, Large Chats with many messsages in history to convert can take a very long time, so you may wish to start a NEW Chat to play with this, otherwise it can be slow to convert old chat messages from chats in history.

Current supported languages are the Above listed and:

Spanish to English
German to English
German to French
French to English
French to German
Italian to English
Portuguese to English
Arabic to English
Japanese to English
Korean to English
Chinese Simplified) to English

If you send chat messages into a chat and nobody in the chat is online to receive them, you will not see anything, until the messages are actually sent, you can also start 2 Skype clients using two different Skype names, for testing to see just how this works if you can't find anyone at the moment to send messages too.

Enjoy, any questions please post them here, please follow the installation notes in the post at the top to get started using this.

FAQ

Q. How do I use this?

A. Once you followed the installation instructions ("First Post in this thread") simply open a new chat using Skype the normal way, invite the people you want into the chat then open the ULRTMT by clicking this link:

http://testing.onlytherightanswers.com/sky...TMTforSkype.htm

Click the Refresh Chat Information button, you should see your chat history on the left, and active chats on your right, under active chats look for the chat you just started.

If you do not want to translate messages already received in that chat then:

Click the on that chat, then select your translation.

If you do want to translate messages already received in that chat, then first select your translation and then click on the chat.

If for example you selected English to German, you can type German in the small box on the left and it will be translated to English for all others in the chat. This allows you to use the left side to type your native language as in this case German, and you can still use the small box on the right at anytime to enter English as well.

Q. Could you show me an example of this where mutiple people are in a chat using multiple languages?

A. Sure, lets say three people are using the ULRTMT and there are four others also in the chat that are not using the ULRTMT but read and type English.

Peter is using the ULRTMT, he has his translation set to "English To German". Peter is seeing all chat messages in German on the left and in Engish on the right. Peter enters his chat text in the left small box, always in German.

Paul is using the ULRTMT, he has his translation set to "English to Japanese". Paul is seeing all chat messages in Japanese on the left and in Engish on the right. Peter enters his chat text in the left small box, always in Japanese.

Mary is using the ULRTMT, she has her translation set to "English to French". Mary is seeing all chat messages in French on the left and in Engish on the right. Mary enters her chat text in the left small box, always in French.

NOTE: Peter, Paul and Mary at anytime can also enter English using the right side of the ULRTMT. In fact they all could/can use the normal Skype chat window at anytime as well to enter text and the ULRTMT will display those messages as well.

The four others in the chat using the normal Skype chat window, only see English from Peter, Paul and Mary, they actually have no idea that Peter is sending his chat messages using German, that Paul is actually tying Japanese and that Mary is typing French.

So here we have a total of 7 people in the chat 3 of them are using 3 different languages, yet they all can communicate and understand each other.

Q. Is there anything about the ULRTMT that I should know, maybe like things not to do with the ULRTMT?

A. Try not to use the ULRTMT to translate large chats, it can take forever, we are working on a version that will increase speed. This is why we present the number of messages to translate so you can say cancel if say the number of messages is over 200+

Q. If I find a problem while using the ULRTMT where should I post it?

A. Since this version of the ULRTMT is for Skype, please post issues here in this thread.

Q. How quickly can my chat messsages be translated from one language to another?

Currently when looking at old chat messages in chat history 4 per second, also while chatting in real-time the same amount of messages can be translated in one second.

Q. Are their plans to add other languages?

A. Yes, this is a work in progress, and we will be adding many other languages soon.

Hope this helps answer some current questions asked by others, and will add more here from time to time.

Online translation is not very accurate at this time, but if someone would like to join a skype chat where English, as one example is being used, and their ability to write English is limited, this can be very helpful.

Skype is International, there should be no fear to join a chat with others because of the primary language being used in the chat is not one that you know well.

Maybe more International chats can be started, kind of a International "SkypeMe" ULRTMTme

New Languages have been added for Real-Time Skype Chat Translation.

The Skype version of ULRTMT ("Universal Lanuguage Real-Time Messages Translator") has been updated from version 2.0 (Beta) to version 2.5 (Beta). The Link is:

http://testing.onlytherightanswers.com/sky...TMTforSkype.htm

NOTE: It is suggested NOT to use or translate Skype chats which contain more than 200 chat messages in their chat history, it takes a very long time to process. It is better to Start a NEW Chat using the Skype Client, invite and add people you wish to be in the Chat using the Skype Client, and then use the ULRTMT for Skype version, after the Chat has been started using the normal means via the Skype client.

If you still choose to process and or translate a chat which contains more than 100 messages already in the chat history, only the last 100 most recent chat messages will be translated.

It should be noted that you can still use the Real-Time translation feature with a chat that has many messages already in history without the need to translate all the messages alread in the history of that chat.

To do this simply click on the chat PRIOR to selecting any translation, then simply select the translation after you have already clicked on the chat, this will allow you to bypass translating the actual messages already in the chat history for that chat, and to just enter new chat messages in Real-Time in the Left or Right small windows.

Remember where to type what, for example if you selected "English to Russian" as your translation, you can type Russian in the left small box which will be actually translated in the Skype chat to others as English, using this example you can also enter English in the right small box, which will also be sent into the chat as English.

Using this example, don't type Russian in the right small box, that is for English sending of chat messages only, and don't type English in the left small box, that is for sending Chat messages in Russian only.

Basically The ULRTMT for Skype version allows the user to view and enter BOTH languages of the translation selection, it may seem to be a little backwards at first but the point is that the "FROM" language is the actual text going into the Skype Chat, So "English to Russian" means the ULRTMT user has the ability to view and type Russian on the Left, View and Type English on the right, but the actual text entered into the Skype Chat is English, that is what anyone else in the chat will see.

All chat messages sent and received in the chat in this example are transled in real time into the actual chat from Russian to English as well as displayed to the ULRTMT user in both Russian as well as English, and allowing the ULRTMT user to Enter and send Russian on the left, and English on the right.

When Russian is entered and sent as a chat message on the left, using the small box, all other Skype users in the chat will see those messages translated to English, this works the same for all languges. This all happens in Real-Time, as does the translation from English chat messages received by this user to Russian.

Let's reverse the situation, let's say the actual Skype Chat text is in Russian, and you only Speak English.

In this case you would select the "Russian to English" translation option ("Because the actual Skype Chat Text is in Russian NOT English") now instead of typing English in the right small box, as you did in the example above, you would type English in the left small box, and your English would go into the actual Skype Chat text as Russian.

Of course, as in the other example, in this case you could also still type Russian in the right small box at anytime, and it will go into the Skype actual Chat text as Russian.

Using these examples, for testing, you could type English in the small box on the right ("Assuming you selected a translation option of "English to..") there also must be at least one other person active in the chat for this to work properly") the left side would translate your English to Russian, you could now "Copy and Paste" what was translated on the left, and paste it into the small box on the left, it will act as if you knew Russian and where typing in Russian, this is a way to see how someone using another language would be using the ULRTMT for Skype version.

You could also reverse the above as stated in the second example.

It all boils down to ("What is the Actual Primary Language of the REAL Skype chat Text?") = From Language and that language will always be on the right hand side of the ULRTMT for Skype page, any Language being translated and converted prior to being placed in the REAL Skype chat, will always be on the left side of the ULRTMT.

Be careful when you cut and paste text from one window to another, because if you accidentally include a carriage return or line feed ("They are at the end of text and cannot be seen") it will make the translation look funky

You can INSTANTLY change languges as well, for example there is no need to re-click the chat once it is selected, you can go from one langauge to the next by changing the translation, and all new messages sent/received will use the current translation selected.

Play with the ULRTMT for Skype version and you can see just what it can do, and in Real-Time.

Please read the posts at the top of this thread for installation and use as well as FAQ information.

Added additional error logic, so the user is informed if an attempt is made to send text when no chat has been selected, also added additional error logic when an attempt is made to translate text and no translation has been selected.

If anyone has any feedback on this example of using the Skype4COM lib, please feel free to comment.

Hi,

First thanks for a tool that promises to be very useful! I could get the http://testing.onlytherightanswers.com/sky...TMTforSkype.htm page connected and interacting with the skype client.

However when I type text (in the right window) it doesn't get translated on the left. When I select a conversation with a low number of historic messages (say 7) they don't get translated either and the "Translation Status" remains on "Processing: 7". I've waited about 15 minutes with no progress so I don't think it's a question of being slow.

It's as if the translation services was not responding but there's no log shown that would help debug the problem.

Thanks
-Vincent

It is very important to follow the installation instructions ("Posted at the top of this thread") exactly, please make sure you added testing.onlytherightanswers.com to sites under intranet security in Internet Explorer as the install steps say to do, otherwise problems like this will happen.

Ah right. I had missed this because I used the first method of installing the DLL and it said to skip the next step. I skipped too much...

It's working fine now.

You are very welcome.

I hope this shows just how useful the Skype4COM lib can be :-)

Please post what you think about it after you get some time to use it, thanks
Please post what you think about it after you get some time to use it, thanks
I have 2 comments so far:

* I work for an offshore software development company in France and I was keen to offer this type of tool to some French customers who do not speak English too well as a may to talk to their Indian counterparts. Unfortunately I probably won't be able to use it for this as the quality of the translation is not good enough and it would lead to more misunderstandings than what we currently have ;-)

* We make a lot of typos when chatting and we use a lot of shortcuts. This doesn't translate well...

* It would be real nice if it were possible to integrate it directly in skype without having to open IE. Of course to do this would mean that skype has some plugin support to intercept messages. I have no idea if that's the case.

Thanks

Yes, online translation is very poor.

This was initally created as a PoC "Proof of Concept" to show the power of the Skype4COM lib. Hopefully to help motivate the Skype developer community to try some new things, come up with some neat concepts and show them off.

Language Barriers fracture communities by default, that is why this concept was chosen as an example over others because the Skype community is the largest International VoIP community world wide.

It was TIME to remove the language Barrier and make an attempt to enhance the Skype Chat concept so that it can support the International community base which Skype has, as a whole community, not a fractured set of communities based on location and/or language.

As development progress continues, the ULRTMT for Skype version will be available as a binary as well, and will not be restricted to Windows, both Unix/Linux and Mac versions are planned as well. SMS translation will also be added.

With some time and learning which words translate better than others it is possible to have a more accurate translation.

When people have no possibility of communicating because of a almost total lack of language skills in the language in question, this gives some hope.

With well over 100 Million users on Skype, I am sure some Skype users would enjoy to communicate with others in other countries but have really had no method to do so in the past, if they had no language skills in the language that a Skype Chat was/is being hosted in.

I lost count of the times I have seen "SkypeME! if you know X language" posts, maybe in the future we will see "SkypeME! if you have the ULRTMT, I am trying to learn X language and currently only know Y language".

The ULRTMT is far from perfect, but have you ever opened a book or magazine that was in a language you did not know? How long did you attempt to get something out of that book or magazine before you put it down?

Imagine what a person who is invited into a Skype Chat for example which is in English sees when that person as an example only knows Portuguese, at least they now have an ability to get even some poor translation on what is being talked about in the Chat and at least can try to converse and send messages to the others as well, that in most cases, the others in the English based Skype Chat will understand to some level or degree, compared to all the others in the Skype Chat attempting to learn Portuguese on-the-fly.

Of course the installation instructions, prompts and text for the ULRTMT will also need to be capable to be displayed in the native language of the users, this is another reason why this is still in Beta.

All I can say is "Wow" and thank you Sooo much for such a positive review Jane :-)

Jane Hoskyn took the time to play with the ULRTMT for Skype and also post a Blog entry on the Share Skype UK Blog. Here is the link.

Made two changes.

Added mail to a friend option, so that you can email the ULRTMT to a friend from the page itself, without needing to invoke your own email.

Added a download link to the Skype download page so that if you send it to a friend, they can find the Skype Download page quickly and download Skype with as little delay as possible.

Simplified the installation of the ULRTMT. It now only requires the following to be installed.

Refresh the ULRTMT Skype version web page or click here to get back to it:

http://testing.onlytherightanswers.com/sky...TMTforSkype.htm

If prompted to install the Skype4COM lib ActiveX, Please choose Install.

You can use the ULRTCS - Universal Language Real-Time Chat Speaker with this at the same time ("Which is currently English only, will support other languages soon") if you are trying to learn English you can hear the words spoken in the chat to hear how they are pronounced.

I forgot to mention that if you have nobody to test with you can open up a chat with echo123 and when the language(s) you select translate, you can cut and paste the language you do not know to the send box below it and it and use the enter key, it will translate it to the other language.

This will allow you to get to know the ULRTMT without needing anyone else involved.

As stated before you can also use the ULRTCS in combination with this opened in another window, so for example, if you were trying to practice learning and hearing English spoken, and the output language to the Skype chat was translated to English from any of the supported langauges, you can hear the output after it has been translated using the ULRTCS, more here:

Likewise, I'd like it for the Mac.

Also, I'd like to translate English to Czech; I appreciate, however, that this might not be the most common language pair!

Thanks so much for the kind words.

I am going to try to make a version that will work with the Mac by end of year.

There is a Windows version that is an Extra as well, and can be downloaded from the Skype client for Windows here:

Tools -> Do More -> Get Extras -> Productivity -> Speak and Translate Chats

This Extra is a FREE Extra for Skype.

Going to try and expand the current languages supported for translation as well by end of year.

Currently, the following Language Translations for text in Real-Time for Skype Chats are:

English to Arabic
English to Chinese (Simplified)
English to Chinese Traditional
English to Dutch
English to French
English to German
English to Greek
English to Italian
English to Japanese
English to Korean
English to Portuguese
English to Russian
English to Spanish

Arabic to English

Chinese (Simplified) to English
Chinese Traditional to English

Dutch to English
Dutch to French

French to Dutch
French to English
French to German
French to Greek
French to Italian
French to Portuguese
French to Spanish

German to English
German to French

Greek to English
Greek to French

Italian to English
Italian to French

Japanese to English

Korean to English

Portuguese to English
Portuguese to French

Russian to English

Spanish to English
Spanish to French

Currently, Skype Chat messages can be spoken in the following languages/voices:

British
Dutch
English
French
German
Italian
Japanese
Korean
Portuguese
Russian
Spanish

To teach yourself a new language, select your language pair ("The first language in the pair being the language of the actual Skype chat, the second language pair being the one you wish to type") open up a chat with Echo123 and enter text in your language, you will see the translated text in the Echo123 Skype chat window, you can also have the translated text spoken so you can learn to read, write and speak a new language.

To use this extra in a Skype chat with others, select your language pair ("The first language in the pair being the language of the actual Skype chat, the second language pair being the one you wish to type") and minimize the actual Skype chat window for this chat.

I created something I call "Double Translation" I re-feed the translated text back into your language so you can see what your translated text really said, example:

Arabic To English

You Type: Hello

In Arabic there is no greeting of "Hello" so I show you that your text was actually translated in Arabic to:

Welcome.

This allows you to modify your text and phrases to get more exact translation.

You can open a chat with Echo123 to see this "Double Translation" taking place using the above example.

So, basically, your typed text, in the translator window is overlayed with the result of your translated text retranslated to the language you initially used when you entered your text.
