Please check CPU temp:

First check
1) Total Recorder

One of the most common reasons Skype might start using 100% of CPU if you have Total Recorder software installed and it is set as default Input/Output device for Skype. To avoid this change the I/O devices to your soundcard or USB Phone in the Skype options menu or change the default Windows I/O device from the Windows Control Panel to your soundcard or USB Phone. In most of the similar cases it has turned out that the reason is incompatibility with some other software components installed on the computer (for example: antivirus Nod32, network monitoring software like Net limiter).

Also, be sure to turn off Windows XP speech recognition feature. The speech recognition engine kicks in when you begin a call and can cause your CPU to run at 100%. Turn off the speech recognition by opening the Control Panel and selecting Regional and Language Options. On the Languages tab, under Text services and input languages, click Details. Under Installed services, click Voice Recognition under the language you are using, and then click Remove.

2) Zone Alarm
Are you running that?

3) CPU Temp
Is this a note book or Desktop PC?
Recently we have been identifying the reason for sudden high CPU usage is the PCs CPU overheating, this is normally caused on notebooks by the fan vents getting blocked but it can also happen on desktops.
Please check CPU temp.
Use Speedfan for this
http://www.computerbase.de/downloads/softw...chung/speedfan/
If temp of CPU is over 70% suspect your fan or air vents. Only cure is a clean out of the vents.

[b]4) PC Issue (CPU Temp)

Many PC manufacturers have issues with cooling, its always worth checking their website for known issues, for example a "must have" for Dell laptop.
http://www.diefer.de/i8kfan/

http://www.diefer.de/i8kfan/manual20/index.html

Of course these DELL tests can be run on any PC.

5) Echo Correction uses a lot of CPU power
To switch of EC see below:
Try toggling AEC and EC via the config.xml.
(You need to quit SKYPE first):

To find Config .xml copy and paste the section in bold:
%AppData%Skype in the address bar of Windows Explorer or IE and it will display all the files in that folder regardless of whether they’re hidden or not, you will see a folder with the same name as your Skype username, double click this folder to open it and you will see the comfig.xml file you have to alter.
Right click on the config.xml file.
Choose open with.
Choose Program.
Select Note Pad.
Tick Always use the selected program………….

Find one entry in the <GENERAL>
<General>
<AEC>0
ADDITINALLY
To control EC (echo control):
In the same config.xml file insert
<EC>0</EC>
under:
<Lib>

<Call>

[b]6) Under Test (New Tip)

Try the following:
Select Start-->Control Panel-->system-->advanced-->performance-->settings-->performance options advanced-->virtual memory-->change
-->select no paging file and reboot.
Then set custom size to your ram i.e. 512mb set 512mb etc (I have 1024mb so set to 1024).
This has fixed my problem CPU usage now running at max 60% with video on.

So what is your CPU temp when running Skype.
#1 - I really didn't understand what are you talking about If u can repeat that with right instructions
Please check this....

1. Audio settings all versions

Skype:
Skype-->Tools -> Options -->Sound Devices-->audio device/USB/etc Audio Device (do NOT use windows default device)
You can also tick the ring pc speaker check box as this is a good backup to alert you even
if the main speakers are off or turned down.

Windows:
Start-->Control panel-->Sound and Audio devices
On the audio tab set the default playback device to your main soundcard (AC97/Audio-chip/add-on-adapter), etc.
Your installed audio device must be present there.
If not, reinstall audio device

There is nothing more to add to this
Also, be sure to turn off Windows XP speech recognition feature. The speech recognition engine kicks in when you begin a call and can cause your CPU to run at 100%. Turn off the speech recognition by opening the Control Panel and selecting Regional and Language Options. On the Languages tab, under Text services and input languages, click Details. Under Installed services, click Voice Recognition under the language you are using, and then click Remove.
just follow the instructions.

Uninstalled, reinstalled. Same issue

CPU temp is fine, fire wall is fine, antivirus also fine - issue persists.

Created a new account - GET RIGHT IN - NO ISSUES AT ALL

Try logging in with my old account - Wheels spin - Hamster Still dead and taking my computer with it. Been in the industry for years. So. Whats wrong on Skypes End?

Curiously, I note memory usage is reading at 5,884k with this new account. Sending and recieving messages, no problem.

Try logging in with my old account, memory usage is 24,884k and system gets sluggish, and I never get into it.

I find it curious that memory usage would increase connecting to my old account, which never successfully logs in.

Changed password, obviously. Any ideas here would be appreciated as the issue now exists ONLY on my old account.

Skype reset

[b]Warning you must remember your Skype username and password before you do this otherwise you will not be able to log in when you restart Skype because the link to your username and password details will be lost when you delete config.xml and all options are reset to default.

[b]First logoff Skype and shut it down.

Delete config.xml and shared.xml
You need to select "show hidden files" in folder options
To be found in
C:
Documents and settings
Your profile name
Application data
Skype -->delete shared.xml
Skype User name --> delete config.xml
Your access to your old chats will be lost (they will not be deleted, only access is lost)
any changes manually edited in this config.xml will be lost

Your access to your old chats will be lost (they will not be deleted, but access to them is lost --> the pointer is saved in config.xml)
All manually changed settings in tools/options or directly in config.xml are lost and have to be redone again.
This config.xml will be rebuilt without any data loss, but hopefully error free, with next start of Skype.
You only must log in newly and Skype will rebuilt a new and correct config.xml
and will download all your contacts.
Note: Think about your contact. If he/she has this problem as well!!!!
