Recording a Skypecast

Many bloggers using our Skypecasts Widget for Typepad have been asking Skype for the ability to record a Skypecast. Long term we'd like to build this in to the product. Does anyone have any experience of recording a Skypecast using a third party piece of software, such as Pamela or Freecorder? If so, we'd love to hear from you.

Recording ability is number 1 on my list of feature requests please. I'm going to try recording a Skypecast today using Freecorder and I'll let you know how it goes.

Are the issues with recording a SkypeCast the same as recording a regular call?

Skypecasts are, in implementation terms, exactly the same as a SkypeOut call. So, any software that lets you record a Skype call, should let you record a Skypecast. Bear in mind, you should warn participants that you are making a recording.
The top three new feature requests are: 1) Recording 2) Private Skypecasts (with ticket entry) 3) Multichats -------------------- Check out Skypecasts: http://skypecasts.skype.com

Just a reminder to those of your recording Skypecasts - you are obligated to let the rest of the parties in the Skypecast know that you are recording them and obtain their permission to record.

I've had very good experience with using HotRecorder since it records the audio from Skype differently from every other app I've seen out there. I don't quite know how it works, but it only records audio from your microphone in one audio channel (say, the left side of a stereo track) and the audio ONLY FROM SKYPE in the other channel. Quite nifty when recording a conversation with IMs going and everything to have all that other audio not pick up in the recording.
They have a free version that records to a proprietary format, but if you purchase it you can convert that proprietary file to WAV format for use in Audacity. Also, I know in the states that in many states it is a legal requirement to inform everyone you're recording that they're being recorded. |

I suggest putting "(recorded)" at the end of the title of the listing, so it will be shown in the controls window and the directory. -------------------- Check out Skypecasts: http://skypecasts.skype.com

How does PrettyMay intend to make money. I get suspicious when the business model for software is not known. Does not look like opensource.

For OS X users, Audio Hijack Pro is a great way to record a Skypecast. I use it to record our podcast; listen to a sample, if you'd like, at -- shameless plug -- http://fourguys.libsyn.com or on iTunes under "Four Guys Walk Into a Bar...."
Things to note: AHP lets you incorporate high- and low-pass filters to get rid of ambient noise and hiss. It lets you record in lossless so that you can edit and only downmix to mp3 when finished. It gives you filters to drop the volume automatically if the 'cast is too loud, and (my favorite) it has a plugin that lets you "create" stereo from mono, which gives the sound a bit more depth. All of these are easy to set up and intuitive. It costs $35 but is worth every penny. |

Thanks for your help so far. I've summarised this thread in a blog post: http://share.skype.com/sites/skypecasts/20...the_record.html
I've quote some of you from this forum. Please let me know if you want me to change your quotes in any way. -------------------- Check out Skypecasts: http://skypecasts.skype.com

Looks good, thanks.
There is one program that I wish I could use with Skype: Apple's GarageBand 3 is set up so that, when you hit record while having an audio chat on iChat, it captures all of the chat participants' voices in separate audio streams -- even if there are four or five of them! It's unbelievably great for editing, because you can e.g. edit out what one person said at a given point without erasing what anyone else said. Unfortunately, it only works with iChat, and some recent testing confirms that iChat's sound quality pales in comparison with Skype's. Is there any chance, o Powers that Be, that Skype could mimic iChat's ability to integrate with GarageBand? It would then be, hands down, the coolest solution ever. |

That sounds cool. I'll pass the suggestion on to our Skype for Windows team.

This prof version must be different from the standard one, which works fine ONLY for the incoming voice, and does not catch the sound at the mike. This happens with eMac and OS X 10.3.9. I haven't tried with Audacity (Mac version) yet. Regards. -------------------- g.giavelli

That's wonderful, and thank you. Is there a Skype for Mac team too? Because GarageBand 3 is, as far as I know, still a Mac-only product, I would think (?) that they would at least have to handle the integration with GB3. It is different. The $35 is totally worth it imho. The way to do it with Audio Hijack Pro is to use your microphone as the sound input, and then in the Effects section add an Application Mixer with Skype as the application. Before recording, launch Skype with AHP, click the "monitor" checkbox, and Bob's your uncle. |

I use Pamela Pro. Works perfectly with everything it claims (except one issue noted below) and has become a critical tool for my small business. I use an Ipevo “Smart-2” headset (http://www.ipevo.com/v2/prod/p134518.htm) and have recommended it to my clients using Skype because the audio quality is superior to most other non-USB headsets I have tried. I use a laptop and leave the headphone jack plug unplugged so I can hear an incoming call through my laptop's speakers and then quickly plug it into the headphone jack and put on the headset. Kind of a pain, but I can live with it. If you're on a desktop with external speakers, the Ipevo headset has a little swith that does that for you. Anyway, the one issue I have had with Pamela is when recording incoming calls, the person I am speaking with records on the right stereo channel and my voice gets recorded on the left channel. I haven't tried contacting the folks at Pamela about this yet and it may be something on my end. I was curious if anyone else has experienced this? I’ve checked all the Pamela options and haven’t been able to find a fix as of yet. |

As I most in many places...dont forget your mac users in whatever recording method you choose. If you can stay away from 3rd party (as its hard enough getting skype to keep on with the mac version compared to windows) and develop recording options in the skypecast itself...all the better

There is also a way to do it with Audacity, though with mixed results.
Here's how: http://audacity.sourceforge.net Download Audacity and install it. When you run it, change the input selection to Wave Out (some sound cards will show up in the list as Stereo Mix or in the case of Sound Blaster cards, WhatUHear). Make sure your mic is unmuted. When recording with Audacity, it will pick up an entire conversation in Skype. |
