Make the Skype "engine" available to developers, without the Skype GUI.

This would allow developers to build a variety of applications/interfaces to use the Skype communications network. The end users, especially businesses, would have a choice of GUI supplier, and Skype would take more PSTN call revenue.

I think the lack of PSTN functionality, and the design of the Skype GUI is currently stopping businesses from taking Skype seriously.

Interesting proposal. Let's see what other developers think of it.

I think it is a very great idea as it could allow developers to build applications on top of Skype that can do much more then using the SkypeAPI and Skype as (i hope) developers will be able to just use the SkypeNetwork, Skype codecs and other Skype basic stuff.

Powered by Skype... not a bad idea - i have to say that if it was an full .dll that we could interngrate FULLY then you will find loads and loads more developers using your technology - me myself would love to build skype into a differant type of system to do a totaly differant thing but cannot do such thing with the current API - skype could force their icon on our applications somehow, i wouldent mind...

Thanks,
if it was an full .dll that we could interngrate
A .dll implies use on Windows only. In my personal opinion, such "Naked Skype" would have to be available across all operating systems that Skype supports. Of course the binaries would have to be built separately for each platform.

I agree that it needs to be available on all the operating systems skype supports.

Hey,

hell yes, this would be very cool and useful!

Hopefully, this "SkypeCore" doesn't consume so much system resources, especially CPU and RAM, as Skype itself..!
And memory (RAM) consumption of beneath 10 MB, like with GoogleTalk or ICQ Lite 5.x, would be wonderful and a huge improvement.. bigsmile.png

(It can't be that e.g. a full AV scanning service, like Kaspersky AV 6 uses less system resources (beneath 10 MB RAM, etc..) and a "simple" phone tool or communication service uses lot more..Sounds like a little bloated for me.. tongueout.png )

Maybe you add additionally and finally support for SIP.
So you can choose between, SIP to SIP, Skype to Skype, or Skype to PSTN!

Then Skype and Skype users will get a huge, very huge new user basis and addition. cool.png :!:

And so, if the "SkypeCore" is optimized for low system requirements and low resource usage/consumption, multiple chat protocol apps/clients like GAIM, Trillian or Miranda can integrate/incorporate/utilize this "layer"/"SkypeCore" and you get again a new incredible huge user base/addition. devil.png

So you really have to internally accurate/carefully discuss and considering this!

thx in advance!

best regards,

Hiding the GUI (SPA-13) and having a totally GUI-less Skype Client (Naked Skype) are two different things.

Technically, yes, but it makes very little difference to the users of our applications! wink.png

Is there a more suitable Jira entry to vote against, or should a new entry be created for Naked Skype?

I wouldn't call Naked Skype exactly an "improvement" or "new feature" -- so the approach Jira is offering would probably be too simplistic. However I did create a wikipage in the Community section of Skype Developer Zone; you can go to https://developer.skype.com/wiki/NakedSkype and try to build a reasonable specification there smile.png

Thanks ppmotskula.

It's probably worth mentioning that the Wiki entry has got a section at end where anyone can add a comment.

I love this idea. This would allow for a developer that wants to develop for business application to add badly need security features.

There are a lot of open issues around NakedSkype -- if you feel you can contribute, please go to https://developer.skype.com/wiki/NakedSkype and do so smile.png
