HI Folks
I would like to purchase a webcam but have absolutely no idea what to look for. I use skype and want to ensure that what ever I purchase is compatable.

Please let me know what are the webcams that work best with SKYPE

I am running XP home and profesional.

Thanks in advance

You can use pretty much any webcam you like, for ordinary chit chat. If youre gonna be using it in pretty dark places it can be a good idea to look for something that isnt so light dependant, though usually its easier to judge a webcam by seeing it in action. I myself use almost the cheapest webcam i could dig out (even though it actually is a really good cam).

A decent webcam will help your partner to see you clearer. The new webcam now is getting better and better. I have tried a couple of webcam
From logitech Express, and some other brands, But I found Logitech Webcam is better. *my own personal experience)

Currently, I used Logitech Pro 4000.

and recently I have tried Logitech Pro 5000 (better Quality)

If you are interested to see my comments about these 2 webcam.
See my blogs:

Logitech Pro 4000:

The new Logitech Pro 5000:

You should be able to get these webcam easily.

I've bought a Labtech Notebook webcam. I hate it so much I tried to return it to the shop, where they only wanted to exchange it for another one, and that I bothered to register to post this message here.
My main complaint is that it requires too much light to work. Just the usual lightbulb in the evening isn't enough and gives a horrible picture quality.

I bought the Creative Skype edition webcam ($40 or £24) http://uk.europe.creative.com/shop/product...8&product=1141&

It came with a little microphone that you can clip on your clothes, and a one ear piece headset with microphone attached and 30 free minutes of SkypeOut. Since I wanted to have more privacy with my calls and to be comfortable, I also bought a headset that had noise reduction and stereo, but it really isn't necessary.

My friend in the states bought a Logitech 5000 and she loves it, but it cost $60. It does come with a built in microphone, so she didn't buy a headset. She has a wider angle which I like. It means that she can move about more and I can still see her whereas with mine you can just see my face. Hers can also be used in low light and mine can't.

Check the frames per second on what you buy. Mine is 30fps which is the slowest I would go, but you can get 90fps which cost a lot more (£100). I haven't seen the quality so I can't comment on it.

Whatever you buy.........have fun!!!

If you are using a headset - mic combination does the mic in the webcam conflict with the headset mic?

My webcam doesn't have a built in mike (Creative) but my friend in the states does (logitech 5000). When she first used it last week, she had her headset - mic combo on, not realizing that her webcam came with a mic as well. So, we were talking away with me saying things that I should not have if I had known that the person behind her could hear me! Very embarassing.

Now she only uses the webcam mic. Let me know if you want me to ask her to see if she can turn off the webcam mic and only use her headset.

Sorry BobG, When I spoke with her about it she wasn't sure and said she would check it out and get back to me. I'll let you know as soon as I hear from her.

An update:

I have given my Creative to my sister and bought the Logitech Pro 5000.

The Creative was lighter and had a handy seperate little mike and changing the setting for outdoors was just one click.

The Logitech has a sharper picture and is much better in low light which is the reason I bought it since I usually use it at night to call the US.

Anyone who wants to buy a webcam must look at Cowboy Frank's site:

I have a Logitech Quickcam Communicate STX (USB) with a a built in microphone. However there is a lot of background noise in the room and that seems to give poor audio quality for Skype.

So I've found using a good quality Headset with noise cancelling (Plantronics DSP100) improves the call quality no end. These are not cheap, but makes SkypeOut/In workable.

The video quality is very good, and you have a light that comes on when the camera is active - a useful reminder at times.

if you want the crem-de-la-crem camera get a 3com Homeconnect webcam. These webcams are unsurpassed for image quality and ability to perform in low light. I've just bought one and it craps all over previous cameras I've used. The webcams are discontinued but you can still pick them up on ebay. They don't have a bulit in mike, this is the only drawback, but the person you webcam with will always see you bright and clear and sharp. Colour is very accurate. You may need to use the cam with splitcam in skype but it will work. A 3com Homeconnect webcam and a good quality headset mike will put you in the jetset.

Hi Lucar,

In your Skype window, pull down "Tools," choose "Options." On the left, you'll see "Video (BETA)." Click on that and check the box at the top of the page, "Enable Skype Video." Click "Save" at the bottom of the page, and you should be able to see her.

Best wishes,

Mark H.
