hello folks:
Lately China Telekom blocks the access to www.skype.com. Fortunately the access to the German site still works, that´s how I could buy SkypeOut . Please have a look on that really bad issue. By the way: Using skype is no problem, just wen site access, so I even cant download updates by the normal way! Regards Michael |

tbagger,
Do you talk to "Shanghai" computer-computer or do you use SkypeOut? BTW jirong said it's possible to use Skype, but impossible to reach the website. Do you happen to SkypeOut to mobile phones in Shanghai? If so, how costly that is for the receiver of your calls? hensho P.S. This thread is cited in here: http://blog.tmcnet.com/blog/tom-keating/ So let's be as thorough as possible in what we're saying (as usual of course  ) |

I regularly call:
- Via SkypeOut to mobiles in Shanghai (but I wouldn't how much the receivers pay to receive those calls). - Via Skype-to-Skype to users in Shanghai (both in the city center and and the suburban areas). I have also made a couple of SkypeOut calls to Anhui Province. So far it works reasonably well. TB -------------------- Less is More

Can anybody also confirm if KhaosLabs (http://www.khaoslabs.com/) is blocked in China as well? We've had reports of it being blocked in some places because of our affiliation with and dedication to Skype.

The funny thing is that the block somehow is selective.
My wife and I are sitting in Shenzhen on the private network side of a wireless/wired DSL router, and of course we share the same WAN address provided by China Telecom. Still, she is logged in (using a fairly old 1.2 skype), while I cannot log in with either my XP notebook (I tried 1.2.0.48 - doesn't help) nor my Linux PC. The whole think looks to me like a plot to make the money CT thinks they lose because of Skype. But for an expat like me skype is the only choice, I won't pay .80EUR/min for China Telecom phone private calls, no matter what. Let's hope all this is a "technical difficulty", otherwise I'll have to go looking for another service. Some annoying Skype "features" finally also come to the daylight: that stupid auto-login Skype enforces. Until recently you at least had a choice, now they do it under the table, with the effect that cclicking on the desktop button will now simply fail after a short flickering of the clock symbol. Stupid design choices always get you in the end |

What a fantastic site! Unfortunately, real-time testing wasn't available when I checked. I'll be sure to post back later.
Thanks alot! -kevin -------------------- Skype Forum Moderator

TB
I have SkypedOut to non-mobile phones in the most northern (Lioning), and in the most southern states (GunagXi) and to Shanghai too, it worked flawless (from a Mac OS X.3 system). And the new flat rate is truly incredible: just 50 Eurocents for 25 minutes! |

Thanks alot! -kevin
BAD (old) NEWS - I asked Ben Edelman about http://cyber.law.harvard.edu/filtering/china/test/ ... the real time testing for blocked sites seems dead. Is that right? On Aug 24, 2005, at 12:31 AM, Ben Edelman wrote: Yes. Regrettably, China began blocking our testing methods so thoroughly and so quickly that there was nothing we could do to maintain publicly-accessible real-time testing. Apologies, Ben Yesterday CNN (in Europe that is) had a special on censureship on the Interne in China. They showed how messages in forums that contained the word "democracy" were simply wiped out almost instantly. They reported that CISCO hardware and Microsoft and Google software supported them in censuring the web. Two sites (in two character sets) that used to be blocked in China are: http://news.bbc.co.uk/chinese/simp/hi/default.stm http://news.bbc.co.uk/chinese/trad/hi/default.stm hensho |
