Hey, I was just thinking the same thing. I was going ask the folks here who are familiar with the Linux code base how difficult it would be (besides the usual BSD to SVR4 networking issues) to do the port.
Perhaps we can work on it together? Best, Glenn -------------------- Phi Kappa Epsilon: The Crypto Fraternity

Hmm. That was an interested sidetrack. After a quick perusal of the lxrun pages, it seems like you have to install a distro as well as Solaris, is this correct? Seems like a pain, if so.
Also, as you noted, this only works for x86 and so doesn't help me much with the SunBlade on my desk. Most of the people I know who run Solaris, run it on SPARC. So I think we're back to porting. Ideas? Best, Glenn -------------------- Phi Kappa Epsilon: The Crypto Fraternity

if you look around the Skype for Linux users are pissed that there are no noticable development for Linux so porting to Solaris is very obscure.

xboxrulz had it right. we ARE lagging behind windows with linux development already (wanna help? we're hiring) and there are currently no plans of creating a solaris port.

It works with BrandZ, which is a feature of Solaris Express and OpenSolaris allowing Linux apps to run on Solaris. Should be in Solaris 11.

Should be in Solaris 11. Alastair, I presume you mean a Branded Zone (container) running RedHat or CentOS, correct? I just switched to the Solaris Express Developer Edition last night so I'm still finding my way around. Are you doing that now? How practical or costly is it resource-wise to keep a Branded Zone running in the background to receive Skype calls? What has your experience been? Has anybody else found any other way to run Skype on Solaris 10 since the last post? Steve Mitchell http://www.ByteworksInc.com |

I've seen a few posts asking for Skype to be ported to the Solaris x86 architecture, but I have not seen an official thumbs-up or thumbs-down to the idea from the Skype people . Will there ever be a Skype port to the 32-bit or 64-bit x86 versions or Solaris? I switched my home Dell machine to Solaris Express Developers Edition, which is based on OpenSolaris. The only capability I seem to have lost in the switch is Skype.

I can give you both In answer to your question, I can say this - it is something we'd like to do one day, but I'm not going to give you dates, or how likely it'll be, if it'll support sparc./64bit etc. We are planning to release a OSS only build of the linux cilent, which should run in linux emulation mode in FreeBSD, Solaris, etc since they have OSS so this should do the trick. Please keep in mind while we want to be able to make the Linux client available on as many platforms as possible, our biggest priority right now is Video and this will take priority over things ilke porting to Solaris, ppc, etc. etc. Hope this helps. Ryan. |

Now that OpenSolaris is officially released, expect to see a lot more Solaris adoption. Sun is aiming for the usability of Ubuntu, and power of Solaris. OpenSolaris 2008 05 is very very close to achieving that goal.
Here's another vote for Skype on Solaris. My work uses Skype, so that's the only reason I need a Windows computer around. I do my development on OpenSolaris. http://www.opensolaris.com If Skype refuses to do Solaris, maybe the protocol can be opened so that multi protocol IM clients can access the Skype network too. Our company uses text IM more than voice features. |

Any news on Skype port to Solaris, or OpenSolaris?
Come on, Solaris is used by companies for development these days. And yes, the same companies are also using Skype services for internal comms (formal, or informal). It is a big pitty to switch to Windows every time you want to place a SkypeOut call.. If I was younger and had more time, I would probably make the Skype port myself and just use it... Ahh, just joking, I forgot Skype is a closed app :-) Ok, seriously, I think it is a good idea. If the Skype team is able to port to an old SonyEricsson K750i Java mobile phone, then I don't think recompiling Skype for Solaris is a big challenge neither. And I'm ready to spend my SkypeOut minutes from Solaris desktop from day one. |

You are maintaining 6 or 7 builds for Linux distributions which each have their incompatabilities. There is really only one distribution of Solaris that you need to build against (unless you do for x86 and SPARC). Unlike Linux, Solaris remains backwards compatible all the way back to 2.x. The current release is Solaris 10, and OpenSolaris will become Solaris 11.

Hi,
I even managed to upgrade to OpenSolaris, and there is no sign that Skype will be ported... ;( Why? Is there something we do not know? Some war against Sun (and us, its users)? Give to us code, we will build it... ;-) This post has been edited by 3eka: Fri Jun 13 2008, 19:38 |

QUOTE (ppmotskula @ Fri Feb 10 2006, 10:29) Go to the original post xboxrulz had it right. we ARE lagging behind windows with linux development already (wanna help? we're hiring) and there are currently no plans of creating a solaris port. You wrote that in 2006. Has anything changed now in 2008 with OpenSolaris 2008 05 release now out? Who can we lobby to get Skype on OpenSolaris? Sun paid Adobe to build Flash 9 on Solaris, and they paid NVidia to keep their drivers up to date for Solaris. Maybe there is an opportunity for Skype to make some money with Sun. |
