Skype blocked by ISP Prodigy Infinitum TELMEX (MEXICO)

Hello all,

Im a skype user from Sonora Mexico and I have noticed that since the beginnings of March Users from Baja California and Sonora are having problems dealing with VoIP with a particular ISP Prodigy Infinitum TELMEX.

Skype, DialPad, Vonage, Net2Phone have the same problem.

It appears that one or several routers from UNINET are destroying 87 % of the packets sent for VoIP purposes. These May or may not be intentional from TELMEX, probably they are just incompetent, However I have to recognize telmex technology so, My guess is that they are the problem.

If someone has figured how to overcome these problem please help.

here is my results from testyourvoip.com

Hi ecn,

You mean that your ISP connection was being routed through a proxy (Squid) which interfered with Skype?

Others are having problems with Skype and Telmex and assuming this was intentional to interfere with voice communications. (Affecting Skype, Vonage, Packet8, etc.)

Could this be the same problem? Maybe un-intentional?

Couln't get to the www.skype.com web paga. After a call they unblocked me. 10 minutes later they blocked me. During a call she said . hey wait 10 seconds.. they unblocked me. And finally when I hang up.. they blocked me! ... I Was so pissed off. THEN I CALL AGAIN, and told them I was going to change ISP if they didn`t do anything in 2 days more. And taran! no moro blcoking , however I still have a shitty connection trough Telmex infinitum, at work.

ecn,

Thanks for the update ...I'm sorry your experience continues to be bad - I was hoping for something better.

The fact that they reversed the change, so you cannot use Skype again seems to indicate that Telmex is purposely trying to interfere with internet telephony!

I've seen one news item about the illegality of internet telephony in the Mexican press...If anyone sees more news like this, please post on the forums.

It is strange that Skype support has been very quiet on this one. Hopefully, this is because they are aware and working on the problem.

Thanks again,
Len

Doing a little research into this, I discovered that all you Telmex ADSL users, you have all signed a contract agreeing not to run any VOIP over your connection!!

See here:

Has there been any advance in this area? When I call my parents in mexico (they use prodigy infinitum ISP), almost always there is a shitty quality, and the call ends abruptly every 5 min or so. Any news from skype staff about this?

Hello eduardo,

First Try http://testyourvoip.com/

You can make a diagnostic of your connection. Do you have a firewall installed in your computer such as panda?

See that you haven´t blocked the skype program to access internet. If it does not works contact me.

I just added your skype username.

Greetings

Hola morros:

I'm new with this "Telmex Infinitum" thing; and I really liked....is fast and very reliable...the only problem I have is with the 2wire modem that they use..... actually is not the modem...is us that we don't know how to use it. 2wire modems protect close all ur ports... and change ur IP for other so that way people won't be trying to infest u with viruses.... thats why is very important to read the instrucctions from ur modem...I use vonage with no problem...and I use the MNS messanger and skype without problems

I know this works in other countries. Not sure if it will in Mexico, but I see no reason it wouldn't. Try personalVPN service from Witopia.Net (http://www.witopia.net). It's a VPN service that will encrypt and tunnel your traffic through the blocking.

Has anyone figured out how to make Skype work in Mexico using TelMex?

I have a 2wired modem and have enabled all ports on it and on my router. When i make skype calls, i can hear the other person fine but they cannot hear me well at all. This only happens some of the time. Other times it works perfect.

If there are any solutions please let me know

Hi to all, here is the step by step to prevent prodigy block your skype.

1. Click Start
2. Click Run
3. Type notepad.exe "C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts"
4. Review the "HOST" clear all the text and save.

Many users using 2WIRE users had been Hijacked. HOST file most be blank, you can delete the file also if you want. Review your 2WIRE "http://gateway.2wire.net" and set a custom password.

5. Open your browser and type "http://gateway.2wire.net/mdc"
6. Type your router password (2WIRE)
7. Go to DNS Resolve and click on "DNS Resolve"
8. Your DNS Resolve must be empty, if you have some records you has been Hijacked by Telmex or other source.
9. Then go to Broadband Link and click "Configure"
10. At the end of the page you may found "Internet Connection Settings — DNS"
11. Check Manual Configure DNS
12. Type OPENDNS Server (www.opendns.com) 208.67.220.220 and 208.67.222.222
13. Reset your computer

As you may notice you had flushed all DNS from your system and router, now all address are resolved by a thrid-party DNS, You may found many features for security on www.opendns.com and is FREE. Also you may use any trusted site like skype.

Regards!
