I use a realtek ac97 soundcard. Whenever I spoke to someone on skype they heard an echo of themselves. I was fine.
BUT even though I was fine, the problem was actually at my end. In other words .. If you're speaking to people and they get echos of themselves, and you get choppy sound from them, then the problem could actually be at your end. The solution is as follows: 1. Download the latest version of the realtek driver (important) 2. double click on the windows speaker icon 3. select playback properties 4. MUTE the microphone in the playback section 5. select recording properties 6. SELECT the microphone in the recording section Worked for me , hope it helps someone else here. |

I had a similar issue, and decided to change my (very) old Soundblaster card into a (more) recent one from C-Media... A 4 channel PCI (called US000010 Soundcard...) 4.1 card... cheap and good enough !
I did the same, enabling the microphone in the recording section, and... Yes ! that worked... Now our Skype conversations are clearer than the ones opened to a fixed line... (And we are talking between Canada and Belgium...) Cheers ! |

Hi am here again. Ok, after i did all this, I hopefully hoped it works now, I cold landline phone, and still this very bad Echo, I muted the mic on the Audio, and I elected the mic on the recording, like explained, but my brother said it is impossible, he hears this awful echo and cannot understand what am telling. So after upgrading the realtekCA97 and all what was told who should solve the problem, it ii didn`t helped at all.
My cho Test is good, but that`s it, to call another person is just unpossible. Now, I can hear clear the person who talks to me, like a radio or phone, so I cannot understand how this is happen? i have skypeout in the account and still cannot use it. Very sad. |

how can you mute the microphone (in playback mode) on a laptop. the volume controls on laptops don't seem to allow you to do that.

Hey,
I think what a lot of people are having trouble with is that when not using headphones the mic picks up the speaker sound and sends it back to the talker. Is the tip of updating the sounddriver meant to solve this problem or is it another type of echo? If so is there a solution for a mac powerbook? Regards Mads |

As far as I know the procedure should be just the same as for a desktop. Assuming you are using Windows - DOUBLE click on the Volume icon in the taskbar. Then in the box of faders that opens up, go to the Microphone one and put a tick in the box marked 'Mute'. If there is no fader marked Microphone you may need to go to Options > Properties and make sure that there is a tick against Microphone in the Playback section so that the Microphone fader appears where you want it. Don't confuse the Microphone fader in the Playback section with the Microphone fader in the Recording section (which must be ON) Big Ears |

Can any1 suggest the solution for a Linux setup?
Linux systems never assume that anyone would want to use their microphone for playback in the same way that you wouldnt try to record from a speaker, but I have a little echo and the other end has a really bad echo only when using SkypeIn or Out, PC to PC is not a problem. |

I have 10165 Model Handset and call Argentina a lot using SkypeOut. The reception is lousy. Is there a better solution than the 10165? In the past I used NetPhone, but they have left the VoIP scene, howver the reception was fantastic. Not with Skype
Any suggestions? -------------------- peter hickey

I can't even find my sound card anymore. What did I do to lose it.
The person I talk with gets an echo. When I double click sound or speaker icon, I don't get properties or playback or any of the things you say. I just get the following: Sound effect Equalization Speaker Configuration Speaker Test S-PDIF-in S-PDIF-out HRTF Demo General and the things you say to click aren't anywhere there. lisette |

Skype's echo cancelation doesn't work with PowerBooks. Just a bug, probably. I have tried everything. It's fine if I use my headphones, but lame if I use my internal mice and speakers--they hear an echo.
Too bad. |

Too bad.[/quote] Of course they will thats not SKYPES fault but the set up. You can not expect Mike and speakers in such close proximity not to pick up the sound from the speakers via the mike hence echo -------------------- "We judge ourselves by what we feel capable of doing, while others judge us by what we have already done."

The only other solution besides waiting is to: Report each and every failed or bad quality call do not just send in 1 report keep doing it even if you are calling the same failed number each time to pstn-feedback@skype.net with your location, time of day of call and the complete phone number you were calling and of course what happened. Without this information there is not much Skype can do to fix your problem. -------------------- Regards
