No sound at all. Calling test call gives "audio playback problem". Doesn't matter if I use HDA Intell (alsa mixer) or Sigma Tel (my dells sound card). Everything seems ok set in alsamixer. Tried uninstalling Pulse audio package (helped some people) but it had no effect. Head set is not muted. Nor is the mic.
Please help. |

I am having problem getting the front mic to work under skype in ubuntu 8.10 too, I got it working fine with 8.04, however for somereason it doesn't like it in ubuntu 8.10
From some googling, it seems the 8.10 changed the sound driver, not sure it could be the cause of the problem. |

Same problem here. I upgraded to 8.10 and boom, no more skype audio on my Thinkpad with hda intel sound on the motherboard. Then all of a sudden it started working without my doing anything but if any other app tries to use sound, then skype stops working (even though system sound continues to work).

I had a similar problem here.
Changing "sound out" and "ringing" to 'pulse' in the "sound devices" options worked for me. Cheers, Daniel |

I'm having the same problem. I've read a post about how if there are any other sound-producing applications open (rhythmbox, firefox, etc.) then there will be no sound in skype. That part works--if I close everything and open just Skype, then it seems to work.
But really, will there ever be some kind of fix or definitive answer for this? Because closing everything I have open just so I can use one program will be more trouble than its worth. |

Audio Capture problem. Already tried:
1. Running Skype as only open app 2. Running skype as gksu skype 3. Setting all sound options to ALSA 4. killall pulseaudio in term and as session cmd 5. Installing pulse audio device chooser and setting simult audio out I repeatedly try test calls, and repeatedly it fails (cannot hear my voice). Anyone??? |

Same problem here. I've heard it's a pulseaudio issue. Help from a Skype representative would seem appropriate.

I had the same nightmare using skype under ubuntu 8.04 and 8.10 till i got it working, basically you have to setup all audio to ALSA, install the synaptic package 'alsa-oss', set Skype to use pulse. This way i got it working together with all other audio apps like gstreamer.
I have to admit that i had to delete Skype after a short period because the Linux-version is so bad in voice quality that it was not acceptable to use. So i can not tell the exact seeting for the ALSA-mixer but i had to mute the mic for the 'capture' (very strange because via capture you still have to adjust the mic-level) good luck, and don't waste too much lifetime on this (it took me 3 days of testing ;-)) |

It is not necessary to install alsa-oss, or switch anything to ALSA. If properly installed, pulse sound quality will be excellent.
Follow the directions on this web page, titled "HOWTO: PulseAudio Fixes & System-Wide Equalizer Support:" http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=789578 You won't be installing a system-wide audio equalizer, (unless you want too!) but the initial directions get Pulseaudio working properly. Make sure everything in System-->Preferences-->Sound have been set to Auto Detect. Set Sound Capture to PulseAudio Sound Server. Several Pulse related files need to be installed, such as mentioned in the above link. That discussion also makes suggestions as to what to change in the PulseAudio daemon configuration file should there be issues with audio quality. Set Skype's sound devices as mentioned above by digitalb0y. Skype needs to support PulseAudio. It is time. I find that everything works well as long as I don't try to hot plug a pair of USB headphones while Skype is running. That usually causes Skype to freak out and reset the Sound In and Ringing parameters to something that will not work, and I have to go back in there and reset them to pulse. Using USB headphones can be problematic. Occasionally I find although Skype is working, its audio output is not going to the headphones, but still going to the machine's internal sound device. Using Pulse's Device Chooser fixes that however. Basically if I leave the USB headphones permanently plugged in - it works. Once getting Pulse completely installed, it works pretty well. The only two applications I have encountered so far that have a problem with it are Skype and Audacity - and there are Pulse solutions to both at this time. What I found, is to plunge into the deep end - and go totally PulseAudio. Then it seems to work. No half measures. |

Apply Make test call and enjoy skype No futher instalation or adjustments were made Cheers spacedust This post has been edited by spacedust: Thu Dec 18 2008, 12:41 |

I'm running 8.04 64 bit and the 32 bit Skype on an AMD 64 bit. I experienced the same problem and have found that if I run anything from FireFox 3.04 that uses any sound devices that Skype audio no longer works. If I close FireFox and restart it without running Flash 10 or any of the audio then Skype audio is reestablished. I can recreate this every time so I don't know if it is in FireFox or Skype but that is my work around. I tried to find the Pulse settings referred to here and that was not an option under Audio settings.
Follwoing day: I think I have fixed it by following the link given above. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=789578 Setup Pulse and made the changes in Skype to Pulse. Works without having to restart FireFox. I had to reinstall Flash 10 but all is well. This post has been edited by ronc55: Fri Dec 19 2008, 23:11 |

I have PulseAudio working almost entirely using these two pages:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=789578 https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PulseAudio If you are going to follow anything, that first link is the definitive guide (as mentioned above) and the second I used to fix some other little bits. Regardless, there is still one outstanding issue. When I am running Movie Player (Totem) I am not able to hear Skype. No ringing happens. I have to shut off Totem to make or receive a call. My guess is that Totem is not using Pulse correctly, but that's only a guess. Any assistance here? |
