Account Hacked

No useful response from Skype or Paypal

Like every second post in this forum, my account was hacked (over a week ago)

1. Somehow someone took over my account to make calls.
2. They changed my password and email address.
3. They used up y skypeout credits
4. They racked up more charges on paypal for skype calls.

I believe the vunerability is at the skype end. I have never shared my password. My PC is behind a software and hardware firewall and it is free of viruses.

Thankfully, I was able to remove skype from paypal so that further charges were not racked up. However, those paypal charges that were fraudulently charged through my skype account are not going to be refunded by paypal.
Here is their response:
We have completed our investigation of your claim and have determined that this is not an instance of unauthorised account activity. At this time, your claim has been refused.
If you would like a copy of the documentation that was used in the course of our investigation, please send a letter by post to:
PayPal, Inc.
Attn: Unauthorised Account Access Appeal P.O. Box 45950 Omaha, NE 68145
In your letter, please include your name, the email address on your PayPal account, and the date you filed the Unauthorised Account Use Claim.
Sincerely,
Account Review Department

I was fortunate that I received an email from paypal that a charge had been made on my account and responded immediately by removing skype from the vendor auto-credit facility. If I was travelling, I may not have checked my email for days, and heaven knows what the charges could have reached.

Skype and Paypal are both owned by Ebay. Skype admits that these accounts are being subjected to fraud, but it's owner Ebay still receives the revenue because Paypal refuse to do anything about reversing charges.

Furthermore Skype has done nothing aabout returning my skype account to me. It is very discomforting that a fraud has my skype identity, contact details, and contacts of my friends/family.

At minimum I want my old account deleted. Better would be to have my old account returned to me and the stolen skype credits reinstated.

Despite repeated emails, Skype is now ignoring my problem.

Peggy - I have responded to Norman's PM with the required information to enable skype to return my skype user id. It's been 4 days since I sent this information but I still have not heard anything back from Skype. - How about you?

It seems crazy that it has now been 3 weeks that my skype account has been under the control of a fraudulent person and who now has access to my contacts.

How long should it take to reset a user for goodness sake?

I have yet to hear back from Skype either, after funds were taken from my account fraudulently over 1 week ago. I too supplied Norman all the needed info as well as opening a ticket with Skype CS. This is bad, very bad.

Same here, Norman hasn't responded and I have heard nothing from Skype CS. I'm not a happy camper. I think I'll file a complaint with the BBB. I find this lack of response from Skype beyond unprofessional and simply at this point fraudulent.

A strange thing occures lately- when skype starts it in "invisible" mode. sometimes it turns to "invisible" mode during the time I use it.
I didn't log in any other computer.
Changed password- didn't help :\
Do you think my account was hacked too? Should I be worried?
Thanks
Adi

I am in the same boat with my account hacked. I have tipped off www.theregister.co.uk to see if we can get someone looking at this.

Bravo A Hamilton !!
At least somebody doing something about this.
I lost over 100 € and access to my skype account almost 2 weeks ago, no help from skype recovering my account. BUT ...
I've been contacted by theregister.co.uk and will be talking to a reporter on the phone soon.
I have been a subscriber to The Register daily IT news for years and was only today thinking of getting them involved (for starters)
I usually talk to my brother in germany several times a week over skype, and since I got hacked he has seen my account online with changed profile and country setting. I've been using a DualPhone for over a year to be able to use landline and skype calls on the same device, NO WAY will I throw any more money at skype until they own up to their lousy security issues and at least give me back my account of over 5 years with the name Armitage1k !!!
Paypal refused to give mme back my money as they say it is Skype's fault it happened in the first place. I have severed merchant connection from skype to my Paypal account now and will not reinstate until this issue is resolved.

Dear Moderator!
My skype account was hacked. Yesterday I put some money on my account and everything went well. But today I am not able to log in as skype says my skype name and password do not fit. Even when I try to get a new password it says that my e-mail adress and my skype name do not fit, so I am not able to change anything.
I created a new account to post this message. My old skype name was: meikem86.
Please help me as I am in the US right now and using skype almost every day to call my family and friends in Germany.
Thank you!
Meike

Just for the record, Skype: I have had no reply to my emails to support, Fraud or anyone else even after providing all the necessary details you have asked for. Meantime I am the one out of pocket.

Your disgraceful lack of concern and support for your loyal users will affect your business badly. Please take security and hacking issues very seriously and start communicating with your users.

Like Armitage I am in touch now with a reporter from the register.

I have complained to PayPal about these fraudulent transactions coming from Skype, but they have rejected the claim saying that it is Skype's problem.
