Skype Mac OS X 1.0 released

Dear Skype for Mac OS X fans,

We are glad to announce that Skype for Mac OS X 1.0 is now available for http://www.skype.com/products/skype/macosx . It marks an important milestone in development for us since the first Skype for Mac OS X public beta was released on August 31 last year.

I would like to underline that "version 1.0" is not the end of the road for us. There is a lot to be done in both improving existing features and adding missing ones (for example group chat). Skype has announced a lot of new exciting features and services for 2005 - voicemail and SkypeIn, just to name a few - and these will obviously be supported in the Mac OS X version, alongside others.

Our development team thanks you for your continued support and criticism - all feedback is welcome that helps us improve. Feel free to post any comments and feedback on Skype for Mac OS X in this forum. Also, a big THANK YOU to beta testers and active forum users who have been helping others here - you are what Skype is about. Let's keep rock'n'rolling.

Is there a list of new features in 1.0 that weren't available in the last beta?

These seem like minor improvements from the last beta, but still it is nice to know that development is so active! You've been releasing updates pretty often lately, thank you for that!

Really, this is good news.
However, I have downloaded the new skype version for mac now several times, but I don´t get rid of the old beta version.

I did manage to eliminate the beta version in the download file section, but I couldn´t send it to trash from the tools bar on my desktop. Every time I try to activate the new skype version, the beta version gets activated and the computer tells me that "beta is being used" and there is no choice, I can see, to exchange the old one for the new one.

Please advise!
Thank you very much.
Best greetings,
Elisabeth

Elisabeth,

quit your Skype beta version and delete it from Applications folder. If it is not placed there, use Apple+F key (also called Command+F) to search for Skype application system-wide. Then download the latest 1.0 version from www.skype.com and drag it to your Applications folder to install it. You should be then ready to run and enjoy 1.0. smile.png

Zilmer,

thank you for your reply to my, probably, stupid question that is just an indicative of my unfamiliarity with computer stuff, especially .mac
first I really didn´t manage, it even seemed impossible to delete the skype beta from the applications, until I realized that I better restart the whole computer again. After that all went as you described.

I have now the new version of skype running. Funnily it looks the same as the old version, so let me have try these days of the new functions that can be used with this newest version.

Thank you, again, Zilmer,
best
Elisabeth

Elisabeth,

you are welcome. It sounds you are probably running the very latest version of Skype.

There are not very many visual differences from previous version, but if you really want to be sure about the version number of your current Skype, check 'About Skype' menu item from 'Skype' menu right next to the little Apple logo icon at the top left corner of your desktop.

This command displays Skype's 'About' menu box and you can see the version number there, it should be 1.0.0.0. You can close this About box by clicking on any of the texts it contains.

Great news - Tried it tonight using PowerBook 17 with iSight mic and Sound Sticks to a friend with new iMac. The most noticable thing was lack of feedback or echo. Is this a co incidence or one of the great fixes in v1.0?

We also by mistake called up using iChat as well - interesting it worked with a sort of echo chamber effect - amazing!

Love it

thanks.... Peter

 I just booted the new Skype 1.0 for OSX and it worked at my first attempt, as expected, needless to say - I do not see anything different about it, in general, but there may be something new hidden it there somewhere -

cool.png keep up the great work, dudes, and I shall add a note about the new update on my special Skype page at http://www.kardas.net/y05skype.html

I only wish that every new app were as fabulously simple to use as Skype is! Simpler really IS better :!:

Dear SKYPE team & community -

Skype is a great leap for us all, I think, but it has a few very frustrating characteristics - perhaps I have just been unable to properly run the software but here are my two biggest problems with the interface:

1. There seems to be no easy or intuitive way to change or edit the contacts in mac skype. I have a few failed numbers in my contact list but they cannot be removed. At the same time, there seems to be no way to just grab a number and fit it in - I am pleased that one my import the mac address book - but - what if one wants to have a separate (smaller!) list of names and numbers? Please advise me - perhaps I am missing something simple; but, it seems one should simply double click on a name or number to edit. (!)

2. Please DISABLE default log-in on new installations. This is a real pain I must say, many of us have complicated things we must do to log-in, and this can cause endless hangups if Skype keeps calling to a network which isn't there; it has caused long "semi-frozen states" on a few machines during boot. Perhaps you have fixed this already (?) but it this has also caused much frustration.

Generally you have done a great job - this is intended as constructive supportive critique -

best to all from Berlin, Germany,

Jason

Ctrl-longclick (or right-click) a contact... Choose... et voilà ! :-)

DISABLE default log-in on new installations.

At the launching of each new update, the user can make his choice;
and thereafter, at any moment, by opening the Preferences of Skype (General).
