Dear friends,

I have installed the Skype 4 Beta to test the new functions but in all times that Skype turn online, my modem Siemens Speedstream 4200 crash the Internet connection. The only one solution to restabilish internet connection is turning off the modem and close Skype 4 Beta.

My System:

Windows XP SP3 Brazilian Portuguese
Skype 4 Beta with Brazilian Portuguese language active.

Thank you.

PS: Sorry for the bad english.

I have a Telstra supplied Siemens Speed Stream 6520 and when I installed the latest version of Skype the modem jams and resets. This happened in Windows XP and in Ubuntu 8.04. The fix was to disable the plug and play using SpeedStream DSL Gateway, the address for the gateway is 10.0.0.138.
After disabling the plug and play option Skype works both in Ubuntu and Windows XP

Ever since I installed version 3.8 my Siemens SpeedStream 6520 DSL modem just restarts over and over until I close Skype. Older versions work just fine. I'm assuming this bug is still present in version 4 as seen by the other users in this thread.

I have the same problem. Are you now saying that the disabling of Plug and Play through the Speedstream DSL Gateway doesn't work? If it does can you explain how to do it? Thanks.

Did any others of you used Skype 3.8 before?

In Skype 3.8 we introduced new upnp scheme which could be causing it.

Can you please create a Skype logfiles when you upnp enabled on modem and when it crashes.

It would help us to find the roots of this issue.

I believe I may be experiencing the same issue. Yesterday Skype advised that an update was available so I downloaded and installed it. After a few minutes we found that our Siemens Speedstream 6520 was rebooting. It happened a few times before I realised that the only thing I had changed was the update to Skype. I replaced Skype with the previous version that I had running and all has been well since.
I am running Skype on Mac OS X 10.4.11 on a PowerBook G4. New Skype version is 2.7.0.330 and the working older version is 2.6.0.137.
I will set up the logging as per instructions and retry with the new version. Once I have the log files which one(s) will be required and how do I get them to you?
Thanks,
Richard

I managed to disable the upnp and my Skype 3.8 now seems to work well.

I've had the same issue with my Seimens 6520 ADSL modem, and have disabled the uPnP on the modem and that seems to have solved my problem. My skype version is 3.8.0.139.

I did some research on that issue with our network guys.

We are aware of this issue, but we are unable to fix it, because those Siemens routers are having difficulties with one standard uPnP command which makes them to crash.

So this is a bug in Siemens DSL routers firmware.

I advice you to contact about this company from where you got this router and complain the problem to them.

I was referring to version 3.8 that I installed when I posted with my problem here, because I wanted to bring awareness of the bug so it does not carry over into version 4.

But basically you're saying it's not going to get fixed because your guys say it's a router bug, and we should keep using an older version until it no longer is supported by the network?

Tell your network guys not to pass the buck off on Siemens, and create a fix for the software. None of my other software crashes the router. Only Skype.

I actually agree with referring the fault to Siemens. In my case, referring the fault to Telstra/Bigpond as it was them who supplied me the router. Yes my SpeedStream 6520 was rebooting like crazy last night and I would have never thought a program such as Skype would cause an ADSL router to reboot! Infact I even thought the router had a hardware failure of some sort rather than suspect Skype. Check out http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1027932

However there are other applications that are also causing this router to reboot, Azureus (Bittorrent) is another prime candidate. Both are using UPnP functions. I suspect there's a bad piece of code which makes up the UPnP functionality in the SpeedStream.

Swapping out to a different ADSL router has resolved the problem for me.

Hi Raul,

Please, please, please can you ask your development guys to make uPNP optional (via a tickbox) in the next version of Skype. The bug in my Siemens modem is driving me crazy and Siemens will take a long time to fix the bug, if they ever do at all. I don't want to turn uPNP off in my modem as it is useful for other software. uPNP is optional in most other software so why not in Skype?

thanks

Thanks for suggestion.

As these routers crash also with other applications then I would really suggest to disable uPnP on them until Siemens fixes this problem.

Thanks Raul. Currently Skype is the only uPNP enabled application causing my router to crash so it's the only one I would turn off uPNP in if that option was available. I don't need to turn it off at the router. Skype is the only app I use that's triggering this bug.

You can also fall back to an older version of Skype. Currently www.oldversion.com has Skype 3.1 -- Raul what's the chance of getting Skype 3.7 which is a lot closer to current and doesn't give this problem?

Thanks Bullwinkle,

I've found a workaraound for now, albeit a very annoying one. After starting Skype, if I let it run for about 5 minutes it eventually stops rebooting my modem. I just try to keep Skype running all the time now so I don't have to go through that.

cheers

Heh mine kept rebooting till the cows came home...and since I live in the city that means it was going to reboot all night long and beyond if i left it. As soon as the Internet link came up...BOOM.

So for those of you with either the Siemens 4200 or Siemens 6520 ADSL modems, I advise you to fall back to a version pre 3.8 otherwise you will be stuck with untold trouble.

Hopefully Siemens will release a firmware update. But I doubt it.

Raul:

I think this is a valid question and suggestion despite the fault in the Siemens ADSL CPE's.

I would like to see this as an option also -- what if I am connected directly into the Internet i.e. using a public IP with a Cisco router that doesn't have uPnP? This isn't very uncommon...how does Skype work without any router offering uPnP?

I just bought today Siemens Speedstream 4200 and I've experienced this issue, and I've set the following options at UPnP option:

• Enable full Internet Gateway Device (IGD) support

Options:

√ Enable access logging
√ Read-only mode

And using Skype the connection stopped to drop.
I don't really know how exactly "Read-only mode" works, if it let the UPnP works normally or not, the point is that my connection doesn't drop anymore like before.

By the way, I had before the modem D-Link 500G (Generation 1), and with UPnP enabled it also has had problems, like dropping the connection. But with longer interval than Siemens.
