Slow resume from hibernate (winXPsp2)

When I have skype running, my laptop takes longer to resume from hibernate (almost a minute extra). I'm running Skype v1.0 on WinXPsp2, on a Dell Latitude X300. Any suggestions?

This problem is as old as Skype!

The Skype authors don't seem to to care about this problem.

I could offer a little workaround where you click on a "modified" Hibernate button (on the desktop). This will
1. kill the skype process
2. go into Hibernate mode
3. upon resume will restart skype.

If interested, post a message!

Why not post your work around.

Attached is a Zip-file which has the necessary stuff in it.

To all the "real computer geeks" out there:

I know this is not a very sophisticated approach, but it works like a champ! (At least for me)

Let me know if it does the job on your computer as well!

Thanks greatly! I have been trying to find out what is causing this, and I will not test with and without Skype and report back. Indeed, hybernate for me takes about 10 minutes!!! sadsmile.png instead of 10 seconds. Would like to verify skype is the cause though!

First I'd like to report back with thanks that the batch file works excellently, except I suggest you change the instructions readme file for idiots like me who forget:

C:Progra~1SkypePhoneSkype.exe

for example is the normaly place people have skype if they use default installation, but they need to know that instead of Program Files they must write Progra~1 smile.png

Now I can report back. I don't have the hybernate problem with Skype running, even without installing the fix shortcut mentioned above. So SOMETHING ELSE on that machine was causing the problem, but not Skype.

So I will keep that useful batch file in case it is needed if the other problem resurfaces.

But please Cinq and others having this problem, can you tell us how you know that it is Skype causing the problem and not perhaps some other program? Have you really tried a number of times in a row with the problem, and then only shutting down skype first and trying again without problem, and been able to repeat that a few times? Only that way we could be more sure...

And for the micro$hi1 window$ expert$ out there: is there some debugging log somewhere that one can see what is causing a long hybernation? TIA

Hi bkuqux,

it might be a bit too early to say, that skype is not causing the problem on your system.
Here is how the problem manifests itself:

If you run skype and you hit the "hibernate" button, the system goes into hibernate mode.

If you restart the machine within an hour or so, nothing happens and the computer starts normal.

If however you let the machine sit over night or an extended period, upon restart it can take up to 15 minutes (if you wait that long) until the computer is up and running.

It seems, as if the time delay is somwhow related to the time the computer was in hibernation (I know this sounds stupid, but lets face it, not so long ago everybody thought, the earth is flat)

Leave the computer in sleep mode overnight, and keep us updated.

Check six,

Franky

Hi! I don't think it is that, at least not with me. Because my laptop has not had more than five minutes hybernate time over the past weeks! And the problem is not getting up from sleep, it comes back nice and fast, but GOING to sleep it was taking about 10 minutes with the bar going across ever so slowly, about one notch every 30 seconds or so. And skype is always running but the problem is not occuring now, if i try hybernate, it goes to sleep nice and quick. The only thing I can think of which i am not running, is active sync to the pda, so perhaps i should try with that when i get time to put this into hybernate, as it may take 10 minutes if the fault comes back! So i still am not convinced it is Skype? And unless i missed it, forgive me, but why do you put it down to Skype?

Sorry, I missunderstood your problem.
I thought waking up from hibernate is the problem !

I agree with you, that skype hasn't got anything to do with your problem when entering the hibernate mode.

Sorry can't help you there.

OK that's not a problem, as it has not come back with me yet... but I wanted to know why YOU think Skype is the cause of YOUR slow hibernate (or is it wake up at your end?) problem? Thanks

I have been experiencing this for months and it **IS** Skype - I can recreate this problem wiith every suspend/resume. Even tried a fresh install of XP with nothing else installed except Skype. If it is running and logged on when you suspend/hibernat, it can take up to 10 minutes to resume. Turn Skype off, and all problems disappear.

Todd is right, I run 4 different PC's in the family and they all show the same symptoms.

It is definitely Skype that is causing the problem, but it is only evident, if you let the computer sit for a while while hibernating (at least a couple of hours or so).

I guess this is why it is a bit tricky for the skype boys to reproduce and fix the prob!

Any comment from skype staff ????????

This isn't a hibernate only problem. I have hibernation disabled. With two installs of Weirdows XP HE (previous and present) I have the same problem when resuming from standby.

The patch on this page:

http://mypage.bluewin.ch/a-z/f.beetz/index.htm

should work for your standby problem as well (if you have hinbernate disabled).

Let us know if it solved the problem for you
