I had the same problem and i just fixed it by running chkdsk utility.
in run you type cmd then ok, the window appears where you type chkdsk c:
checking your c:/ disk might take up to one hour
then you will have to restart your computer, but it helps smile.png

Mac expert here. In general, if an application goes wonky on you, try deleting the preferences. These are usually found in <home directory>/Library/Application Support/<name of program> or in <home directory>/Library/Preferences.

3. Dmitris, just so you're aware, it is almost never the case that something as minor as this trouble was requires a full reinstall of the OS. While I have had many such troubles on the Windows side (although with XP that's less true), it's almost always overkill for OS X. And in fact, in this case (a corrupted preferences file, happens not infrequently) it wouldn't have fixed the problem, because the old user data including preferences would have been reimported. Now you know, so you can give more accurate help in the future. This isn't meant as a slam, just to give you some data you seemed to not be aware of.

Yeah, now see... I just want to add for the sake of any others with this "unable to mount" issue that not only did the deleting of the user identity in Application Support work very well... it also only took about 30 seconds.

And this is where, as well intentioned as all that reinstall advice might have been, this is a perfect case of where getting to have one opinion or another on how to fix something really isn't valid. It would take HOURS to recover from a total reinstall, etc. of everything. And just seconds to do it the right way.

Imagine if five people... ten people... or a hundred people log into here and end up taking the wrong advice on how to handle this, simply because we are trying to be nice and allow a wrong recommendation to stand. There's no need to be rude to anyone, of course. But when one does present a solution... they need to do so carefully.

Anyway... thanks for this. You just saved me a boatload of time and effort. Deleting the prefs works great.

I found that not only does the removal of your specific profile in your skype applications support folder correct the problem but going further and quitting Skype and taking the tossed user folder and putting it back into the skype support directory and relaunching skype allows you to recover all the chats and information you had to begin with.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

Oh and there is no need to repopulate that splash screen with all your information. You're only going to toss that out again anyway.

Great! I reinstalled my computer and after 6 hours of hard work I've got Skype again. I lost all my information btw.

J/K It was funny to read the format and reinstall answer. I know you Dimitri tried to do your best, but that answer sucks. Thank you though for the cool solution that doesn't involve a reinstall.

Why don't you rank best solutions as Yahoo does, so it's easier to find it.

Best,

Bob

Hi guys,

First post here, just an FYI... I just had to update Skype to the latest version and got this problem. Oddly (or maybe it's to do with the new version?), I didn't have the /Application support/Skype/ folder.

A quick restart however cured the problem fine.

Also, I'm on 10.6, dunno if that makes a diff.

Cheers

Suggestion:

Rather than delete a file like the preferences file or the skype file in application support, rename the file.

e.g. ~/../skype could be renamed to ~/.../skype.oldversion

Doing this will allow you to undo your changes or to take bits and pieces from old directories in order to restore files or info from files.

@ lixpaulian. Haha ya know, i was reading Dmitris' steps and something seemed very MS-esque. Your absolutely right, Mac OS doesn't require all that garbage to get one app running as MS does. Good call man.
