Hi!
I'm using now a 64bit Debian and I don't get Skype running since the Debian Etch version is 32bit. How do I get Skype running and why isn't there a 64bit version?? Thanks, Suzu |

This has been answered many times before and there are instructions already posted on how to get Skype working on 64bit Debian/Ubuntu systems.

Ohh sorry sweety for asking something. Oh sorry, I used search "Debian 64bit" and didn't find anything. I'm not perfect, this is why I've asked. What a drama for you. In Debian, just install ia32-libs. That should hold everything you need for the static .deb to run.

Is already installed, but I still can't use the Debian 32 bit Etch which is offered by Skype.

try:
sudo dpkg -i --force-architecture *.deb where *.deb = the file that you downloaded from Skype, and yes, that's 2 minus signs before force if it reports missing libraires, install them via Symantec & repeat This post has been edited by JamesCole: Thu Nov 22 2007, 20:43 |

That's all fine and dandy but a 32bit Skype will not work with a 64bit Jack and that destroys one of the most useful aspects of Skype usage (for me) and that is being able to record and shunt the Skype around via Jack.

Fine and dandy, maybe, but I've gone through these steps and the static linking deb doesn't execute with the latest lenny system. I am running amd64 architecture with the latest packaged kernel, and these are the steps I followed:
# apt-get install ia32-libs libqt4-core libqt4-gui # dpkg -i --force-architecture skype-debian_2.0.0.72-1_i386.deb OK, so the package is installed and the binary is in path, but still: $ skype skype: error while loading shared libraries: libQtDBus.so.4: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory I was getting a similar error with asound2 libs before I read this thread, assuming that message vanished because lib32asound2 is a dependency of ia32-libs, but no similar lib32qt4-dbus (and I'm guessing other required 32-bit libs that the loader hasn't mentioned yet, those libraries would need 32 bit versions as well) irie-eth0:/home/kingdon# ldconfig -p|grep QtDB libQtDBus.so.4 (libc6,x86-64) => /usr/lib/libQtDBus.so.4 The library is there, but no similar version exists without that x86-64 tag... NB asound2 got the required files: libasound.so.2 (libc6,x86-64) => /usr/lib/libasound.so.2 libasound.so.2 (libc6) => /usr/lib32/libasound.so.2 ia32-libs dependencies provides a 32 bit version of asound. QT, no such luck Is there a flag I can pass to apt-get that will force architecture to i386 for a set of packages? I don't think so. Can parallel copies of these QT libraries come from the debs by official sources? I think the answer is also no, the libraries' files live in the same namespace unlike lib32asound2 and libasound2 (x86-64) If I manually force architecture and install a bunch of 32 bit QT libs, it might work, but then I've broken QT for my entire 64 bit system. Has anybody made better progress running Skype with a recent Debian system? *curses 64bit machine for fouling everything up again* |

thanks for your help. Skype is running now on Lenny 64bit.
another question: how can I delete the *deb file. I can't see skype-debian_2.0.0.72-1_i386.deb in my Synaptic? greetings Wolfgang |
