MULTIPLE TABS POPUP!

Skype bugged out my IE 7 browser!

Hi,

I just installed Skype 3.5. I am running Vista Home Premium with IE7. After I installed Skype, it has seemed to have bugged my browser because now every time I open it, a million tabs just repeatedly open until I start closing some of them. It is the site that talks about the IE 7 plugin. "This Page is only shown once". YEAH RIGHT!!!!

NVM, I figured out I had to disable the skype add-on in the IE7 settings. STILL VERY ANNOYING TO DO THOUGH. Apparently the software still has some bugs or something. Also, I think it's ridiculous that you can't just DELETE the IE 7 add-ons, you can only DISABLE them.

There are actually two IE add-ons installed by Skype, one you can delete and one you can only disable. Here is the complete procedure.

There are two ways to get rid of the Skype Browser Plug-Ins. Either prevent them from being installed in the first place (this gets rid of two out of three of them), or disable/remove them with the browser Add-On controls. Please note that once you choose to prevent them from being installed, they will never again be "automatically" installed as part of any future Skype upgrade, but you will still have to perform the third step of the browser disable procedure below, because Skype will in fact install one ActiveX control despite your specific instructions not to do so. If you choose to remove them via the browser add-on controls, keep in mind that they will probably be reinstalled the next time you upgrade Skype, so you will have to repeat this procedure again. In both cases, if at some point in the future you do a complete uninstall/reinstall of SKype, you will have to go to the Installtion Options screen and prevent them from being installed again.

How to PREVENT Skype Browser Plug-Ins from installing

- Download the latest Skype installation image, and execute it

- In the first installation window that comes up, click "Options" at the lower left corner

- In the Installation options window, un-check both browser plug-ins. If you want to avoid other potential future problems, also un-check the Skype "Extras", which are also installed silently by default and have nothing to do with Skype communication

- Also un-check the box for "Run Skype after installation"

- Complete the installation normally

- After the installation is finished, and BEFORE you run Skype the first time, perform step 3 of the following procedure, to disable the ActiveX control that Skype has installed despite your specific instructions not to install Browser Plug-Ins.

How to Remove / Disable Skype Browser Add-ons and ActiveX controls

Internet Explorer 7:

- If there is a "Skype" Icon visible in the IE7 toolbar (you might need to click ">>" at the right end of the toolbar to see it), click on the down-arrow at the right side of the Icon and select "Remove Skype add-on for IE"

- If you don't see a "Skype" Icon in the IE7 toolbar, go to Tools / Manage Add-ons / Enable or Disable Add-ons. Select the "Skype Browser Extension" and the "Skype Browser Helper Object", and for each of them choose "Disable". Note, this will only disable the Add-ons, it does not actually remove them.

Firefox:

- If there is a "Skype" Icon visible in the Firefox toolbar, click on the down-arrow at the right side of the Icon and select "Remove Skype extension for Firefox"

- I you don't see a "Skype" Icon in the Firefox toolbar, go to Tools / Add-ons, select the "Skype Extension for Firefox", and click Uninstall. Then close the Add-ons window, close Firefox, and restart it.

For BOTH Internet Explorer 7 and Firefox:

- In Internet Explorer, Go to Tools / Manage Add-ons / Enable or Disable Add-ons. From the drop-down list at the top of the window, select "Add-ons that run without requiring permission". Then select the Add-on with Publisher "Skype Technologies SA", and click "Disable". Unfortunately it is not possible to remove this add-on, the best you can do is disable it.

Sadly that doesn't work. Everytime I load IE I 'remove skype addon for IE'. Everytime I reload it comes straight back!

Even after disabling the addons, it comes back! How do I get rid of it. If I uninstall skype completely will that stop it from crashing my internet?

Hope someone can help cause it's happening constantly sadsmile.png

Nice post Jamie, but it is the solution to the wrong problem. You are thinking in general use of the plugin. This problem is very specific.

I have this bug too.

It's not the plugin itself that has problems. It's the help guide popup. It always pops up when the browser starts. There should of been n option to turn that guide off.

Yeah I have the exact same problem. The Help Guild for IE7 always pops up even it says only pop out once. Please fix this huge problem. It's very very annoying. Also I know that if you UNINSTALL SKYPE, this problem will be solved, but that means I can't use SKYPE, so what's the point?

I really need solution now, fix the bug please SKYPE!!!

Hi,
I had the same problem and it was really annoying me. The way i got rid of the pop-up was to go:

    Tools
    Manage Add-Ons
    Enable or Disable Add-Ons
    Then Select Skype Add-on (mastermind)
    Select Disable
    Restart Internet Explorer

This worked for me however this isn't exactly the ideal solution so i was thinking whether it is possible to access what happens upon I.E. starting like you can for windows in msconfig for this would enable you to isolate the problem and solve it. Just putting the idea out there for a techy to tell me if its possible lol.

Hope this helps.

Hi... Thanks for the post!

The pop ups were making me really angry!

It turned out that, yes I did have to go in and disable it as you stated.

Thanks Again!
