Does anyone have a recommendation for a microphone for the iPod touch (1st or 2nd Generation)?

We use Apple's own headset for the 2nd Gen. 1st Gen iPod touch won't support audio!

The 1st Gen iPod Touch will now support audio as of the 2.2 update. I have found two microphones that the iPod Touch 1G will support - both made by Macally - iVoice Pro and iVoice III.

So hopefully they will work with Skype?

So if v1 will accept audio as of 2.2.1 will it work with the iphone earbuds with built in mic? Has anyone been able to get this to work?

I would also like to know the answer to jxspence's question. Also, are there any 1st gen-compatible mics other than the 2 from Macally?

from what I understand, must be a dock port based microphone. The Apple headset with mic doesn't work with a 1st gen v2.2 Touch....

Check it out: for both V1 and V2 Touch products:

http://touchmic.com/products-page/

One of the quotes:

"*** ATTENTION: We have tested and confirmed the new SKYPE app works with this microphone for 1st Gen and 2nd Gen iPod Touches. Note you will need a REGULAR headset plugged in to the 3.5mm jack to listen to the person on the other line/sound. WE RECOMMEND THIS MIC OVER THE iVoicePro if you plan to use with SKYPE.***
"

Very cool, and lots of choices

I tried it and it didn't work. What was specifically done to get the mic to work with a touch 1G?

For my second gen I am using the Phillips SHH1610 purchased at Target for $10. Works well for me.

The iVoice III from touchmic.com works with my 1G iPod Touch. There may be a few apps that don't recognize the mic, but they are few and far between. Skype does work with the iVoiceIII tho.

Sometimes in order to get it to record you need to make sure that you have headphones plugged into the 3.5mm jack, otherwise the mic may not activate, for whatever reason, other than that it has worked great for me.

If you still have problems just try different combinations of starting the ipod, reseting the app, reinstalling Skype, plugging in and out with the mic, ect.. you should be able to get it to work.

The main issue is making sure you have a headset plugged in so the mic will record.

I'm also using a macally ivoice iii with my 1st gen ipod touch. There have been a few inconsistant glitches (mic switching off when call is put on hold, and not switching back on when taken off hold) but it definitely works. The one complaint I have with this setup is that people I've called have said that the audio is very quiet, and I find myself having to speak very loudly to be heard clearly. There doesn't seem to be any line-in or recording volume setting either in the Skype app or the iPod's general settings. Maybe this is something that could be included in future versions of the app?

As a newbie with Skype on my 2G iPod Touch, using the Apple headphones with microphone has been great--pricey, but great. Sound quality is fine. The pods for the ears fit me, whereas the stock headphones that came with the Touch are way too large. My only complaint about the Apple with mic set is that they tend to get tangled up very easily putting them away, due to the slick nature of the white plastic on the wiring.

Agree--the Griffin SmartTalk seems to work quite well for Skype (Touch 2nd gen.) and also good for audio memos, etc. Its inline controls (with attachment clip) makes it very convenient to use. It was approx. $12 from Amazon. The only downside (probably true of all adapters) is that the combination of mic adapter and earplugs results in a large (excessive) amount of cabling.

The lapel mic from http://www.touchmic.com is only about a foot and a half long so it does not add that much cable to your "micless" headphones... the little clip comes in handy too...

I've just tried out a "Hama RA3 Record Adapter" .

I didn't like the look of the Macally ...too big and looks a bit cheesy!

The Hama is a reasonable size, also has a line-in (haven't tried that!)

Seems to work great for making skype calls on my 1st Gen Ipod touch, but you'll obviously need to use it with a set of headphones.
No jailbreaking or anything needed...it just works!

not the most convenient way to make a phone call....but for a bit of fun, it can be done!

Me, too I prefer using the Hama. A space saver and I really appreciate my 1st gen. ipod touch features. Thanks.

You can do it yourself, take a look at: http://mo-no-e.blogspot.com/2009/07/ipod-t...microphone.html, it's easy and cheap.

I got a Thumbtack.. it mutes the iPod's speaker by default, but it worked fine if you enabled the speakerphone option for every skype call until 3.0.. the speaker doesn't work with Skype at all, even with the thumbtack unplugged.. Anyone else having problems with the speakerphone in 3.0?
