What Do You Like The Most?

What would you like to see?

The Skype for iPhone is everything I expected it would be: fast, friendly, and easy to use. Better yet, the sound quality is superb, better than my normal cell carrier's GSM. There are two things I'd like to see in a future version.

The first is easy: I'd like to have a Favorites just like the one in the Phone app. Right now I have to go to Dial, select Contracts, find the name, examine them, click the number I want, and the finally hit dial. This needs to be simplified, and Favorites would be a great way to do it.

The second request is tough. I want you to complain, constantly, to Apple that you should be allowed to plug into the Phone app. That is, I want to (optionally) link Skype into Phone, so that I'm always logged in for inbound Skype calls whenever I have my phone turned on. Additionally, I want to open Phone, select any name from my Favorites or Contacts, and then press-n-hold the Call button to see "Call using Skype". I'd also want to have a Setting somewhere so I can tell it to use Skype by default when I'm connected to Wi-Fi, or perhaps only certain Wi-Fi's.

There are many advantages. For one, Skype calls no longer get interrupted when another call or SMS comes in. Instead, those calls will get a busy signal, which is exactly what I want. It also means that I can exit out of Phone to look things up while my Skype call continues. All the great "special features" of Phone are transfered into Skype, while at the same time making Skype that much easier to use - if I'm not on Wi-Fi it just calls them, no need to exit the program.

I realize this is something Apple has to do. So complain. I do, but they don't listen to me...

You do realise that when you go into "Call", there is a contact list button next to the green call button, which opens the iPhone contact list? The numbers need to be in +country format though. Keep your Skype contacts list for contacts with direct Skype connections, and the iPhone contact list for those with telephone numbers.

Simon

This, unfortunately, doesn't work too well. Sure, I can open my iPhone contact lists from that button, but none of the contacts in my iPhone have +1 (country code) added to them and the only way to add it once you open it in the "call" dialing screen (that has the number buttons) is to backspace and erase the entire number until you get to the beginning. Either give me a way to import my entire iPhone Contacts directory into the app or add an option to automatically add a country code into the number when you open it from the iPhone Contacts directory.

I have found that you can't add pause characters to the skype contacts, I can add them fine by pressing * then pause, and the commas go in, but when I try to make a call with the contact after saving it all the commas have been removed and the number is now illegal. Please add support for editing contact numbers, not just deleting a contact and having to add them back in, and also support the "pause" concept so we can create dialing instructions into all kinds of conference systems.

Otherwise the calls have been great, no drops, good quality, just hoping to see more maturity in this app on the next update.

I love it. It starts very quickly and the sound quality is great. I use a GE Skype phone as my home phone, always connected to the Internet. The sound quality is better with the iPhone Skype. It is very stable.

I inserted a 1 before all my over 200 contacts and it dials out fine from the Contact list.

However, I would like to be able to have the iPhone ring like a phone. It makes a faint noise and vibrates on incoming calls.

Also, Voicemail is disabled when the iPhone is online. Both GE and iPhone just ring and ring. If I turn the iPhone off, the Voicemail works fine. I cannot see if there is Voicemail on the iPhone, although I can see there was a missed call. I can pick up Voicemail on the iPhone using the Skype to Go number.

It's unfortunate that the iPhone drops wi-fi when it goes to sleep so Skype stops also. I must keep the iPhone on charge or never let it lock to keep wi-fi on.

All in all, it's wonderful and very useful. I'm sure improvements will come.

Thanks so much.

The only thing missing for me is support for bluetooth headsets - that would make it complete.

would like to see a way to trouble shoot sound settings
a way to keep the app on so it will ring while you are doing something else like reading on it or listening to music
I can't use it yet but I am looking forward to getting my sound issues resolved on my ipod touch

I'm hoping that Skype will allow people with subscriptions to make calls too, not just with Skype Credit.

The app seems to work well enough functionality wise, but having access to voicemail would be appreciated.

If you call a destination that is included in your subscription it doesn't matter whether you call from your PC or from iPhone. If you are having problems, drop me a line in a PM with your skype name and I'll look into why you were charged smile.png

My 4 cents about Skype for iPhone... Good app, I know people have been waiting a lot for it. I know I have tongueout.png
Pain points are what everyone mentioned before. smile.png

I just want to say thank you very much to Skype for this application.

It worked first time for me and the call quality has been amazing!

Others have mentioned many features that I too would like, but for my needs it works very well.

Thanks again.

I'm very disappointed the IPhone app doesn't work using the 3G network. I don't want to go looking for WiFi lounges in order to make skype calls. I guess I'll continue to sit in front of my home computer to make my Skype calls as I can't use it "on the road" without stopping at a WiFi lounge. I'm paying At&t more than $150 a month for IPhone and Home Phone and Internet service - seems like they could let us use Skype on the 3G.

My dad used to say that "I would complain if new rope". Your comments remind me of that. First of all, if you have an iPhone, you can call anywhere in the country as long as you have minutes left.

You don't want to go looking for WiFi lounges so instead, you will stay home and use your computer! What's that suppose to mean? Skype on an iPhone is mainly meant for on-the-go. It would be great IF we could use the 3G network while driving, but that is not to be (at least for now.) If you want to stay home and use your computer, you don't NEED Skype on your iPhone.

I just came back from Greece and used Skype on my IP several times, logging on with various open networks. I thought it was GREAT and I still do.

Hey, first off, can't say enough times GREAT APP!

Works flawlessly. I can't wait to see the future direction of Skype on the iPhone. I think it's going to be an amazing and perhaps revolutionary in regards to how we take calls.

I just thought I'd add a few things to my list of personal wants in the future upgrades, which I'm sure are probably coming anyway.

1. Landscape typing in chat, it really does make a difference to finger fatigue.

2. some sort of push notifications via 3.0 to let us know of chat messages from contacts as well as if they'd like to instigate a call so we can start up skype to take it.

3. the ability to send and recieve photos through Skype, the Yahoo! messenger app for iPhone has this ability perhaps something similar could be created for skype.

4. Maybe also even in the future being able to view another contacts Webcam even though we can't send ours, yet (hopefully next iPhone has video calling) tongueout.png.

5. Lastly, I know it's something out of Skypes hands but 3G calling would be amazing. I am aware of the FCC's investigation into the situation but who should we be directing our complaints to in regards to this, Apple or our carriers? I think if there's enough pressure from us the people they will lift restrictions!

I've been using the app for a day or two now and it's worked wonderfully. Oddly enough, I've even been commented to that it works better than on my laptop.

My one and only real request is that you be able to edit numbers rather than delete and retype. Just make it like a note app. That way when I use a number from my phone contact list, I can just hold my finger down over the number and slide to the beginning and place the country code. That would also help with someone like me who has clumsy fingers. Slide through the number and change things, or place left/right buttons on either side of the dialed number. (This would be especially useful because I've seen some international 800 numbers that are like 16 digits long)

To all that are having this problem.... Make sure you are dialing your country code before the number. I had the exact problem and didnt realize that the +1 is required.

So if you are calling in the US you need to dial like this +1 555 555 1234.

Sype! Please add a way to set the default country code on the iphone profile. If you are making calls within the United States you typically do not dial a 1+ before making your call. Having to manually dial the 1+ makes using skype almost pointless as it takes twice as long to dial manually instead of using the phone book.

likes:
-fast startup
-great call quality (much better than fring or nimbuzz)
-clean interface

wishlist:
-onscreen controls for both mic and headphone volume during calls (I'm using a 1st gen iPod touch with a macally ivoice III mic and there is no way to alter the mic/recording volume. default is too quiet)
-quicker way to switch between chats (swipe?)
-notification and access to voicemail
-ability to set call forwarding number from profile
-sms would be great as well...

keep up the good work! awesome app!!

Support for "skype:" urls on iPhone app. I have an app that does click-to-dial on the regular phone, it would be awesome to be able to do the same to click-to-dial with Skype.

The iPhone API supports registering your own URL protocols (like "skype:"), and those URLs get routed through to your app, so it should be pretty simple.

I posted this in a previous thread, but thought this one might have more visibility.

I love the app, works great, but would appreciate if there was a way to dim or black out the screen while on a call when using iPod Touch. This would dramatically increase my battery life - I currently use it for conference calls at home and can only get about 2 hours at a time.

I don't use many apps, but one that is similar would be Pandora - you can click the 'lock' button on the top of the iPod to blacken your screen while still listening to music streaming through the internet connection.

Thanks for helping to improve an already great app!

One big problem I encountered right away: When calling my cell phone overseas to get voicemail, getting the keypad to appear in time to press # to interrupt my greeting is next to impossible. This is partly because the call seems to start halfway through my recorded greeting already, that is, I don't hear the first few seconds of the call, and the keypad seems to be very tricky to get to appear, and won't appear before the call starts.

The regular iPhone function by contrast works fine, I just touch the keypad icon and it pops up right away.

Everything else works well, but that one is going to keep me from using it where I would find it most useful, calling my European cell phone to get my messages.
