Contact list:
Great: picture of each contact. Dissapointment: does not use my "renamed" names of Skype users, but there was in my contact list one exception! One guy who left his name field blank in his profile. There, Skype took "renamed name". Therefore, i would guess this is a bug, and that Skype takes (by preference) the "Full name" of the user unless it is blank, where it takes the "renamed name". It should be the other way around in my opinion! Didn't call yet, but was in a multichat. Dissapointment: No emoticons in the chat! Multichat: Pictures of the poster “each time” (not present in Windows 4.0)! Great! However (suggestion): not necessary to redisplay the picture if it is twice after each other the same poster! -------------------- Only one guy deserves Death Penalty: the one who invented countries, borders, nationalities, visas and passports!

First I love that this is finally out and I am perfectly happy about it only supporting WiFI. My disappointment came when I noticed that some of my address book entries which had phone numbers that included "," commas to add delay for dialing into conference call systems only had the main number, not the delays, or conference codes. This seems like a simple thing to fix in the next update. Starting today I will get a feel for how well it works and the sound quality.
Again thanks for finally releasing this app! |

When Skype for iPhone starts, it says "Loading contacts," but it does not load the iPhone's contact list. Instead, you have to press the + symbol on the empty contacts list page to get a screen that gives the option to "Import from iPhone." Only then does your contacts list appear in the Skype for iPhone application. If you then select a contact, you get an "Add Number" screen showing your contact's name and phone number and an option to "Save" the info. However, before saving it, you have to manually enter the "1" country code for your contact's U.S. phone number. Instead of all this work to build the Skype for iPhone Contacts list one entry at a time, the new Skype application should load the iPhone's contact list automatically and automatically insert the "1" country code as the regular Skype application does.

My first experience was excellent. Installed, called a land line in seconds and had a perfect, clear call. Nice one!
There must be a way to negotiate the use of calling over 3G in countries that don't have problems with the carriers! In Australia for example, the carriers I feel sure would LOVE us all talking over 3G and chewing up all the data plan. When we hit the max, we start to pay. I agree with several others on Landscape for virtually everything would be nice, sounds for notifications, and for some reason the speaker is on speaker phone, not the normal phone speaker.. Obviously, push in SDK 3.0 will allow much better chats so please make that a priority. Perhaps even an incoming call notification? (I know - a little tricky.. but..) Call quality was really quite amazing I must say. I've been using Fring for a while now and really it's not been very good. I'm so glad to be using the real-deal. Tidy up the small stuff fast (like emoticons in chats etc), fix up the crashing bugs that others seem to be having (not me - not crashed once!) and then work out how to enable 3G calling in areas that it's OK - and bingo - the killer app. |

QUOTE (bob_summers @ Tue Mar 31 2009, 14:33) Go to the original post Instead of all this work to build the Skype for iPhone Contacts list one entry at a time, the new Skype application should load the iPhone's contact list automatically and automatically insert the "1" country code as the regular Skype application does. You do realise that when you go into "Call", there is a contact list button next to the green call button, which opens the iPhone contact list? The numbers need to be in +country format though. Keep your Skype contacts list for contacts with direct Skype connections, and the iPhone contact list for those with telephone numbers. Simon |

I'm very disappointed the IPhone app doesn't work using the 3G network. I don't want to go looking for WiFi lounges in order to make skype calls. I guess I'll continue to sit in front of my home computer to make my Skype calls as I can't use it "on the road" without stopping at a WiFi lounge. I'm paying At&t more than $150 a month for IPhone and Home Phone and Internet service - seems like they could let us use Skype on the 3G.

Obvious,we need calling over 3G.
T-Mobile here in The Netherlands say they allow it,but the Skype app blocks it. So please, give us 3G. For the rest, perfect app,I love it,and just used it to talk to a mate in NZ. |

The regular Skype program has a preference setting that lets you instruct Skype to dial the U.S. country code (+1) for all numbers without a country code. The new Skype for iPhone lacks such a preference setting. I wonder if there any plans to add a similar preference setting to the new Skype for iPhone.

Good app, not great.
Some limitations of Skype 4.0 keeps this from being a great app. Importing contacts from Outlook only looks for email addresses and not for phone numbers to add. I STILL DO NOT have a default country code. This is bad. Very very bad. This means I have to run through my entire contact list to add a "1" to the number. I'm not doing that. Also, if I try dialing a "1", then find my contact to call them, the "1" is erased. Great. When calling from Skype is like calling from a landline, this will be a GREAT app. Until then, developers, sharpen your pencils and get back to the drawing board. |

The new iPhone application is fantastic, thank you Skype. The only slightly annoying feature is the start-up sound would it be possible to have an option to turn sounds on and off in the settings?

QUOTE (TheUberOverlord @ Tue Mar 31 2009, 05:38) Go to the original post Thoughts about Skype for Iphone: What do you like the most? What would you like to see? Congrats for finally bringing the "real thing" to the users!!! But... I don't understand why it's not available on the Canadian App store yet. One of my friends, in Hawaii, installed it on his iPhone and sent it to me through Skype. I succeeded to drag it to the Canadian iTunes Apps window but it refuses to synchronize with my iPod Touch. Anybody knows a workaround? -------------------- |

Thanks for bringing Skype to iPhone. Fring just wasn't working well enough for voice calls; the delays were just too much, but with your app the sound quality is great and there are no noticable delays (even with everybody beating up your servers today).

If nobody else has noticed YOU CANNOT MAKE CALLS TO LANDLINES OR CELLPHONES with your skype subscription from the iphone. You have to purchase credit. It defeats the purpose. So I cannot use it with edge, or 3g only with wi-fi and to that you add that i cannot even take advantage of my unlimitted sub plan, what use is it to me then.

I think the most needed feature would be voicemail forwarding. As somebody in the community already noted, the app simply let's the phone ring forever; the normal voicemail settings seem to be disregarded (mine are forward to voicemail after 15 sec and the app sees voicemail as active). And what's worse on Decline, it simply hangs up rather than forwarding to voicemail.
Direct access to voicemail would be nice as well, but since I can get to voicemail by calling my Skype To Go number, it does not seem as critical. Finally, running in the background should be next priority, but unfortunatelly that's limited by the iPhone OS. On a jailbroken phone running Insomnia, the app seems to continue to work after the phone is locked. The skype application could do something like that by itself; unless that violates some Apple SDK API rules, but it's just a matter of keeping the Wifi up. Furthermore, it could be a preference option for those that don't want to run their batteries down. (And I'm sorry you're getting so many negative responses from users of jailbroken phones that don't want to take responsibility for having a jailbroken phone. It's a well known fact by now that Skype app cannot be run as a background process using Backgrounder and requires Mobile Substrate update from Cydia to not crash). Great job! I can make subscription (Unlimited World) calls just fine; I also have credit on my account, but it is not getting used up so far. I've only made few quick calls, but they were all counted against my subscription. It is possible that currently the app checks whether you have credit (instead of whether you have credit OR subscription), ie. this could be a bug? Did anybody with a subscription actually notice their credit being used or you simply cannot use the app without the credit? This post has been edited by mgdbgj: Tue Mar 31 2009, 19:33 |

My two cents about what is still missing:
a) sms support b) sort contacts by both online/offline presence & status (just like it's possible with the pc/mac client) c) smilies inside the chat window d) show nicknames instead of "full names" (you know, there are silly people continuously changing their name e) ordinary phone numbers should always appear as online (but this is related to point b) ) Great app, anyway. Audio quality is just amazing. I take my hat off to you!!! |
